Billy enjoyed this new life of his, being a cowboy, coming home to Missie, his wife. They didn't make much but it was enough to live by and Missie never complained or worried. She saved her money she got from the men and would by supplies they needed. She worked long hours into the night making Billy new shirts and mending the ones he already had.
Tonight was no different as she worked by candlelight mending her skirt.
"Come to bed, sweetheart," Billy mumbled, wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder.
"I will soon."
"Tomorrow's an important day, you need your sleep."
"Is it?" She smiled, looking at him before he kissed her.
"You think I'd forget?" He asked, grabbing and setting her skirt aside, much to Missie's arguing. "It's your birthday."
He grabbed her hands and led her to the bed. She sighed as he wrapped the blanket around them and kissed her forehead.
"I have a big surprise for you," he whispered.
"It's technically already my birthday."
"You'll have to wait til the morning."
"That's not fair!" She laughed.
"It's perfectly fair. Sleep first, then surprise."
Billy drifted off to sleep but Missie could hardly sleep a wink, thinking about what the surprise could be.
As soon as there was visible light from the sunrise she sat up.
"Billy?" She whispered but only received a groan in response. Usually he was a light sleeper and any sound sent him off.
She studied him, he was faking it. She slowly straddled him and played with her mothers locket that rested on his chest. He never took it off.
"Billy?" She hummed, kissing his neck, earning his hands on her waist. "I knew you were awake," she smiled. "Can I get my surprise now?"
He smiled, his eyes still closed. "You're impatient."
"Yes, I am."
She sat up and huffed as he opened his eyes, still smiling. She crossed her arms as his hands gently rested on her thighs.
"Alright," he smiled, patting her hip as she slid off him and he slid out of bed.
He pulled a package that was hidden under his clothes and slid back into bed as he handed it to her.
She smiled and opened it slowly and gasped. It was a novel titled Little Women.
"It's beautiful," She whispered, her fingers gently caressing the pages.
She kissed him twice before she started reading, glancing at him with a smile on her face. Billy smiled, laying back down, his arm draped over her, even if it was only a couple more minutes of sleep before work he enjoyed this moment.
