I was looking through some fanfiction AUs, and saw a detective AU, and remembered the L x reader fanfics and oneshots I've read (L from death note), and that inspired me to write this. Enjoy this written description of my dramatic ass daydreams (I suck at describing, so just try to use your imagination if it's not dramatic enough)
[O/N] = Officer Name
[Zok P.O.V.]
[Y/N]. The criminal mastermind, known for vandalism and stalking. Last name is unknown. At first glance, it seemed like their criminal actions didn't have a pattern, but after looking into the people who were most affected my it, I realized that [Y/N] is most likely aiming at straight, white men. Knowing this, I have an idea of what they might do next. I'm guessing their next move will be- "Detective Zok!"
[O/N] ran into the room. [O/N] is the officer who was assigned to help me with this case. "What is it?" I asked. "[Y/N] vandalized a building again!" [O/N]. "I'll look into it." I assured. "They left this envelope at the crime scene." [O/N] as they handed me an envelope. [O/N] left, and I stared at the envelope in confusion.
I gently opened the envelope. Inside, there was a note.
"whAt I TEll YOU is up to me. How you look at the words is up to you. whAt is aN insult to one is a CompliMent to another. to know what to say, one must know who it's said to. it's something that should be taught in Childhood. diFfiCult? yes. but impossible? no.
- [Y/N]"
Why did they write it like that? Were they trying to confuse me? If so, they were succeeding. Maybe it was a coded message? I grabbed a sheet of paper, and a pencil. I then started to write the capital letters. 'A, I, T, E, Y, O, U, H, A, N, C, M, C, F, C' Gibberish? No. It had to be scrambled. I started trying to unscramble it.
After about 20 minuttes, I managed to figure out what it said. 'CATCH ME IF YOU CAN'... God damnit. They were mocking me. And here I spent 20 minutes doing something that wasn't even helpful... "Wait." I mumbled as I looked at the envelope and letter. I grabed them. "Fingerprints!" I yelled. "Of course! Why didn't I think of that sooner!"
"[O/N]!" I yelled. They came in. "Yes?" I handed them the envelope and letter. "Send these for Fingerprint and DNA testing." I said. They grabed the envelope and letter. "Of course." They walked away.
After a little while, [O/N] came back. "Did you figure out anything?" They asked. "Oh. Not yet. I haven't looked into it yet." I answered. "Huh? Why not? It's been 28 minutes." They asked. "Well, I realized that there was a coded message on the letter. It took too long to figure it out, and it wasn't helpful." I sighed. "What was the message?" They asked. "It said 'catch me if you can'." "So they were mocking you?" "Yeah... I'm kinda embarrased now."
"Don't be. You're a great detective. You know how [Y/N] is. They'll tease and mock you until you catch them." [O/N] said. "Probably even after you catch them too." I smiled. "Yeah. I guess you're right."

"What do you mean, they didn't find anything?" I asked. "They couldn't find anything. The only fingerprints were mine and yours." [O/N] answered. "What about DNA?" I asked. "Still just ours." I sighed. "I really got my hopes up. They must have used gloves."
[O/N] put their hand on my shoulder. "We'll catch them eventually. I know it." I held their hand on my shoulder, and smiled. "You always know how to make me feel better."

[[Y/N] P.O.V.]
"Should I start giving him hints of who I am?" I mumbled to myself. "Eh. Why not? He's not getting anywhere anyways." I grabed a pen and paper, and started writing. "Good thing I already have plans for ways to hint it."
[Zok P.O.V.]
I couldn't fall asleep. I had a feeling that I was missing something important. As if there was a clue right in front of me. I sat up, grabed my phone, and called [O/N]. They picked up after a few seconds. "Hm? What is it?" They said. "I'm sorry to bother you this late, but I can't sleep. I have a strong feeling that I'm missing something important." I said. "Huh? Missing something? You mean a clue you haven't found?" They questioned. "Yes. I feel like it's what I need to catch [Y/N]."
"I can double check everything, if that would ease you." They said. "Are you sure? It's pretty late." I asked. "Yeah. I'll let you know if I find something new. I am pretty tired right now, so it might not be 100% accurate, so I recomend that you go over it when you've gotten some rest." "Alright. Thank you.

"Detective!" [O/N] ran into the room. "Yes?" I questioned. "[Y/N] has vandalized again. And they left another note." They handed me an envelope, and I opened it.
"Even salt looks like sugar. You never know who is who, and you'll never know the truth until you see it yourself
- [Y/N]"
"This seems like some kind of warning..." I said. "Strange. I didn't expect them to want to warn you." [O/N] said. "They're probably just trying to play tricks on me." I mumbled. "But it could also mean something. Do you want me to send it for fingerprint and DNA testing just in case?" They asked. "Yeah. I think that might help. Could you do that?" I asked. "Of course." They smiled and walked away.

[[Y/N]P.O.V.]
He really was clueless. Well, I wouldn't blame him. An enemy sending a warning can often seem like a joke or a threat. It was kinda entertaining to watch, to be honest. I smirked as I got an idea of what to do next. It would be a big move, and it would fully reveal my identity if it goes as planned. But it'll be fun.

[Zok P.O.V.}
"[O/N]!? Is that you!?" I asked, as I heard a sound. There was no response. "That's weird. They're never late." I mumbled. I started to get worried, so I put on my jacket, and ran to their appartment. I knocked on their door, but got no reply. "[O/N]! Are you in there!?" I asked. Still no reply. "[O/N]! I'm coming in!" I said before opening the door. It was completely empty. "[O/N]?" I looked around. There was a note on the table. My eyes widened when I read what it said.
"[Insert address]"
"No..." I quickly ran to the location on the note. "Damn you, [Y/N]" I mumbled.
When I got to the location, I saw a big house with covered windows. "[Y/N]! I know you're in there!" I yelled. "Let [O/N] go!" There was no answer. I walked to the door, and tried to open it. It was locked, so I broke it down. It was dark inside the house. I started to look for [O/N]. "[O/N]! Where are you!?" I asked.
"Hello, detective~" I heard a voice behind me say. It sounded familiar. I turned around, and saw a silhouette in the shadows. "[Y/N]..." I mumbled. "Give me back [O/N]!" "I don't have them." They said. "Wha- don't play games with me! I know you kidnapped them!" I yelled. They chuckled. "Oh, you foolish detective~. I didn't kidnapp [O/N]." They said as they walked out of the shadow. My eyes widened. "I am [O/N]."
The end <3 hope you enjoyed
Should I write a book with this plot? I feel like that would do well. If I do write it, what should I call it?
