One morning, Huckleberry Hound was standing in corner of the living room, where he'd set up his easel. He had a beret and smock on and he was hard at work painting a picture as he whistled cheerfully. His puppy dog Pudgy sat nearby, watching curiously and wagging his tail.
"I'm sure glad that I've taken up painting as a hobby," he said to himself. "I've never felt so relaxed, and on top of that, I've been creatin' some real pretty pictures, just like this here spring garden!"
The hound dipped his brush into the yellow paint, then began making little circular strokes on the canvas as he painted some bright yellow flowers in the green grass. As he worked, he began to sing a song to himself.
"Paint yourself a rainbow around your heart
Every time the world gets you down
Take some green from the fields
Some red from the rose
Some white from the sand
Who needs rain for rainbows?
Now you add a bit of blue from your baby's eyes
And some gold from the gold in her hair
A little love can be the paintbrush for your work of art
Just paint yourself a rainbow 'round your heart
Just paint yourself a rainbow 'round your heart."
And just as he put the finishing touches on his painting, he heard a knock at the door.
"Oh, I guess that must be Hokey!" he said to himself. "He told me he'd be droppin' by later!"
He took off his beret and smock, tugged his bow tie and answered the door.
"Howdy, Hokey!"
"Hey, Huck! We were just about to meet at the park for a little spring sunshine and fresh air! You wanna join us?"
"You bet your booties I do!" Huck beamed. "Maybe we can go and take a little ol' walk around the flower fields too!"
So Huck put Pudgy's leash on, and he brought the little puppy with him as he followed Hokey to the park. They walked down the path for a little while, when Huck heard a familiar chime coming down the road!
"Well now, Mr. Icy's back in town! Right on schedule, too!"
"I don't suppose you want some ice cream?" Hokey asked.
"You bet I do!" Huck went dashing over to where the ice cream truck had parked at the curb, cheering loudly, "Ice cream!! YAAAAAAAY!!" When he got there, he took his place in line.
"One birthday cake cone, please!" he said when he got to the front.
"Ah, there you are, Huck!" Mr. Icy smiled. "I had a feeling I'd be seeing you today!" He scooped up some birthday cake ice cream and placed it in a cone. "Here you go!"
"Thanks!" Huck replied, licking his tasty treat. "Mmm-mm!"
"Oh, you brought your puppy with you?" Mr. Icy asked.
"Yessir! That's Pudgy!" Huck grinned.
The puppy barked and wagged his tail.
"Well, I have a little something for him too!" Mr. Icy said. He reached down and picked up a paper cup from beneath the counter of his truck, and filled it with whipped cream. "There you go, Huck! A treat for Pudgy!"
"Why, thank you, Mr. Icy!" Huck beamed. "Pudgy loves whipped cream!" Then, he let Pudgy have the whipped cream. "There you go, boy!"
Pudgy happily slurped up the whipped cream quick as a flash! Huck laughed as he led his puppy away with him while he continued to eat his cone. "Shuckins...you must have really enjoyed that to eat it so fast!"
