~The Next Morning~
"Hey (Y/N) its time to get up my love." Canute said shaking me awake. I groaned and pulled the warm covers over my face, trying to ignore him and the sun shining through the window. Both were interrupting my much needed sleep.
"We're going to your home today remember? We need to eat and leave okay?" He said while rubbing my head. I threw the covers off of me realizing he wouldn't let me sleep in any longer. I sat up and groaned in defeat, wishing I could stay in bed with him forever.
I sat up and turned to look at him. His usually perfectly brushed straight hair was all over the place. I looked at him and laughed a little. He smiled back at me, placing his hand on my leg.
"Your hairs awful pretty this morning." I teased
"You know I've been thinking about cutting it?" He said twirling a piece in his hands and looking at the ground and then back at me.
"Why would you do that?" I asked confused
"Well. Something's changed in me recently. Soon I'll be a king and even sooner than that I'll be a husband. I think it's about time I stop being confused for a princess." He said looking down at the floor.
"I think your hair's beautiful though." I said taking a seat in his lap and running my fingers through his hair.
"It's just a thought. Plus even if I did I wouldn't cut that much off, just to my shoulders." He said motioning with his hand
"It's whatever you want. I think you look perfect either way." I said getting up off of his lap and beginning to get ready.
"Well anyways, we're heading to your home today. How do you feel?" He said taking a sip of his drink that was sitting beside the bed.
"Well considering the last time I was there I was running away from a marriage, and now I'm going there to get married... I'm a bit nervous. Plus if we do want to get married there I have nothing to wear and I can't marry you looking like this." I said looking down at my sleep clothes and my hair astray.
"Don't be." He said looking up at me and smiling
"But what if-" I started
"Don't be. I've already told you." He looked at me
"You have something planned don't you?" I asked squinting my eyes and standing in front of him, looking at him suspicious,
"You do realize you're marrying a king right?" He said smirking while looking up into my eyes and grabbing my hips.
I paused for a moment. Looking at him trying to read his face.
"But what about a dress-" I started to talk before he cut me off
"How many times do I have to tell you to not worry about it for you to listen?" He said standing up and cupping my face between his palms, making me look up at him.
"Well... at least my hair isn't tangled." I said moving back. He looked at me and smiled for a moment, still cupping my face.
"Well it's not like yours is much better." He said moving his hand up to ruffle my hair.
"Shut up!" I yelled back while running my fingers through my hair.
"I'm going to change and untie the horse. You should probably go and pack the rest of your things. I tried to pack what I could while you were busy snoring."
"Hey I don't snore!" I said turning around to look at him. His blue eyes shined in the sunlight.
"Sure you don't." He said while walking out of the door.
"Oh and brush your hair." He said while laughing as he closed the door
I sighed and began to brush my hair.
~
I hung on tight to Canute as we rode closer to my home town.
"Put your hood up." I said in a whisper into his ear. I knew we were close to the city boarder.
"Why are we going to be interrogated again?" He said in my ear.
"Yes. No offense but your people did go to war against mine. They're not keen to let outsiders in." I said in a whisper.
"My bad." He replied back and sighed.
He moved to tie his long hair up and tuck it under his hood. He struggled to tie it while leading the horse so I tied it for him.
"Thank you beautiful." He said squeezing my hand that I had moved to wrap around his torso.
"You're welcome." I said resting my head on his shoulder. I looked into the distance and saw the city I grew up in. I took a deep breath remembering what happened the last time I was there.
"Are you okay? You seem tense." I didn't notice it but my grip on his arm had tightened.
"I'm sorry I thought I would handle it better."
"Would you rather go somewhere else? We can anywhere you like, anywhere at all it's not too late we can turn arou-" He said frantically while stopping the horse.
"I'm fine. It's rather to face it than let it fester. Plus I have you." I said trying to convince myself of it.
"You're strong for that I wish I could do the same." He said softy
"What do you mean?" I asked
"Ever since Ragnars death I've been avoiding thinking about it. I can't seem to face it. It doesn't seem real. The past few days with you have felt so much like a dream I haven't been able to even think about it." He said, there were tears in voice.
"I'm sorry. He would be proud of you. You a couple of months ago would have never done something like this. It takes guts to do this. You've grown." I said rubbing my thumb against his arm.
"I know that. But it doesn't make it any easier." He said while taking the the reign in one hand. We started to move again.
"I know." I said while holding him.
"Thank you (y/n)." He said in a soft voice. This time he was the one holding onto my arm.
"Always." I said back
~
As we reached the entrance I warned Canute to stay behind me. An old man with wiry hair and cold eyes looked up at me as I stood before him at the gate. His sword hung loosely at his side.
"Hello." He said looking at me and smiling. He then turned to see Canute cowering behind me and scowled.
"Hi my name is (Y/N), my husband and I are merchants. We've come to do business here." I said in Welsh looking down at the man.
"Nice to meet you Miss (Y/N) I do hate to tell you but there's not much business to do here." He said looking up at me. I knew he could see right through me.
"I know that. I'm from here." I said smiling down at him
"Well I knew that. Your accent tells it all." He said smiling again
"Does your husband speak Welsh?" He turned to look at Canute who was awkwardly standing behind me and looking at the ground. He looked as if he wanted to disappear.
"No he's English." I said calmly
"Are you sure?" He looked at me suspiciously
"I believe I would where my husbands from." I said annoyed
"He looks Danish. Don't see many English with hair that light." He said while moving his hand down to the hilt of his sword.
"He's not. He's English."
"Who do you belong to?" The man asked aggressively
"My father was a farmer here but he's passed long ago. My uncles name is Askeladd. He raised me after in England." I said
"Mhm I see. I've heard the name. And now tell me what's your real business." He said looking into my eyes.
"My fathers land. I've come to see his grave and collect any leftover belongings. That is my real business. We will not be here long."
"Why collect something that's been left for years?" He asked, his hand still gripping his sword.
"I had to leave suddenly."
"Why?" He asked.
"I was arranged to be married." I said looking him in the eye. It wasn't a lie.
"Where are you headed after?" He asked
"Back to England with my husbands family, he's from Bath."
"Mm. You may pass Miss (Y/N) but don't think I'm not watching out for the Dane. Make your business here be quick or I cannot promise there will not be any issues." He said looking into Canutes eyes.
"Thank you." I said as I grabbed Canute's hand and hurried him along.
"What was that guys issue?" Canute said whispering into my ear.
"He knows your Danish. You have to be careful not to show your face here or it could mean trouble. We don't need to stay here long." I said sternly
"We won't need to. I've already sent word." He said in my ear
"Word of what?" I asked
"Things you need not to worry about." Canute replied back. "Now what direction is your fathers house?"
~
As we reached the old house I let out a sigh. Thankfully it was deep into the woods. The closest people around us were miles away. The house was overgrown with vines but still it stood. I looked into the yard which my father worked so hard to keep pristine and full of crops, which was now nothing more than an overgrown field.
I closed my eyes as I opened the front door, half expecting my father to be standing there as I opened it. But he wasn't. Instead it stood exactly as the last time I saw it. My cup in the same position in the kitchen as the last time I drank from it before running away.
"Are you okay?" Canute asked as he walked inside behind me. I felt his hand rub my shoulder.
"Yeah of course it's just a bit different to be back." I said pushing my emotions aside.
"I understand." He said looking at me
"There's a small stable outside where you can tie the horse up. I guess I better start knocking all of the cobwebs off of my bed so we can sleep." I said turning to him and laughing to myself, trying to brush everything away.
"I'll be right back." Canute said as he stepped outside, he squeezed my shoulder one last time.
I was alone in the place I never thought I would see again. As I moved toward the bedroom visions of a life I once lived popped into my head. A life full of laughter and warmth in this house, which was now full of dust and cobwebs. I fell to the floor over taken by tears. I looked up to the ceiling to see the dolls I played with as a child still propped up against my shelf, as if they had been waiting for me to return.
As tears fell to the floor I felt Canute's arms wrap around me.
"I'm sorry I should have know this would be too much. We should've gone somewhere else." He said in a whisper.
"No don't. It's just that everything looks exactly as I left it. I'm sorry it just got to me." I said as I wiped my tears.
"Why don't you sit in the living room while I run you a bath? I think you need it after a long day." He said as he rubbed my face and wiped away what tears remained.
"Alright." I whispered a little defeated.
"Good." Canute said back.
I walked into the living room and sat in a chair in the dining room, looking out the back window. I could picture myself running through the back fields carefree and barefoot as my father screamed at me not to run through the crops. I could still smell the smell of the first rain of the summer and how my father and I would celebrate. I could-
"(Y/N) the baths ready." Canute said softly breaking me from my thoughts as he called to me from the back.
"Thank you." I said as I walked closer.
"I'll work on dinner. Relax." He said smiling
"I'll try." I said back as I closed the door behind me
I slipped off all my clothes and sank into the tub. It felt like heaven compared to how cold it was outside. I almost fell asleep until I heard a voice that didn't sound like Canutes come from outside.
My blood turned cold as I came to the realization that Askeladd might have caught on to where we were.
"Canute." I screamed covering my body with my hands.
"Yes I'll be there in a moment." He yelled back from the front of the house.
I heard the creak of the front door shut and his footsteps grow closer. He knocked on the door.
"Yes you can come in." I said softly.
He stepped inside. I could see his face turn red as he tried not to look at my body.
"What was that? I heard a voice." I asked
"I've been having communications from men-" he started
"You've been talking to men from camp?!" I asked furiously
"No they're Ragnars men, they serve me. This wouldn't be possible without them. They are trustworthy I assure you." He said softly, trying to calm me down.
I paused for a moment, taking a breath.
"Well what did they say?" I asked a bit pissed off
"I wanted to talk to you about that... I think we should get married tomorrow. I just received word that a priest is on his way and should be here tomorrow by noon. He's bringing with him the crowns and the rings." Canute said looking down at me
"The crowns?" I asked
"Yes. As my wife you'll be crowned the Princess of Denmark."
"Oh I forgot about that I'm sorry." I said softly
"But what about the dress? I have nothing with me I can wear." I asked
"When you get out I have a surprise for you." He said looking down at me and smiling while rubbing my head.
"What is it?" I asked
"Get out of the bath and you'll see." He said motioning toward the door.
I put on my clothes as quickly as I could, ignoring my wet hair and followed behind him.
He opened the door to my old bedroom and my jaw opened seeing what was lying on it. It was the most beautiful dress I had ever seen, only one I had ever dreamed of being able to wear. It was (your favorite color) and made of silk. It was something only royalty could wear. I moved to touch it and felt tears well up in my eyes.
"How did you-" I began to ask
"Being royal has its perks sometimes." He said looking at me and smirking.
I moved to him and pulled him in a hug. Being with him made it all worth it.
"Thank you." I said softly as happy tears fell from my face.
"Tomorrow you'll be my wife. That's the only thing I could ever wish for. If anything I should be thanking you." He said as he laughed and wiped away my tears.
"I love you."
" I love you."
