Meet the town

"Luke's?" I asked, looking at the building in front of me with the words "Williams Hardware" plastered on the front wall. But according to Lorelai, this was "Luke's"—the best food in Connecticut.

"Don't be deceived by the rustiness and...oldness," Lorelai said, when we started to walk into the diner.

The smell hit me first. Fried food. I had only had it once. When I went on a school trip. Emily and Richard had been upset when they found out. "It wasn't food for someone of our high status."

"Can I get a burger?" I asked Lorelai.

"Of course!" She laughed. "Who do you think I am—my parents?" Even though I understood where she was coming from, I was offended.

"Luke!" She yelled in a singsong voice. A man with a backwards baseball cap and a flannel shirt walked out of the storage room.

"Coffee?" She asked. He sighed.

"Rory, tell your mother that she should stop drinking coffee. It's going to kill her," Luke said.

"Then I'll die happy. Also, Luke, this isn't Rory."

"Then who is it?" He asked, turning to me. I smiled and waved—shyly.

"This is Rory's twin, Lucy, and she'll have a burger!" Lorelai said with a large gulp of the coffee.

"Wait. Your daughter?" Luke asked, disbelieving.

"Yeah, and she'll have a burger!"

"Hi, I'm Luke, I own the diner. I also keep you nut job mother caffeinated," he mumbled, offering me his hand. We shook and I smiled.

"I'm Lucy."

"We're going to be here a lot, Lucy, so you better find a usual," Lorelai explained as I scoured the menu.

"Eh, I'll probably like whatever you and Rory like," I said, closing the menu.

Moments later, Luke brought out a burger for me, which I ate like an animal, while Lorelai watched me.

"That's your school," she said pointing across the street. It was about the size of my old school, but gave a more casual vibe.

"I start tomorrow?" I asked, finishing off the remains of the burger, which, even though I had never really had one before, was exceptional.

"Yup!" And I'll drive you. Just tomorrow, though. Rory can show you the walking route.

"Can we go?" I asked. "I want to see Rory."

Lorelai smiled. "We'll let's go then! Actually, let's go to Doose's market to get stuff for movie night!"

"Movie night?" I asked. Lorelai's phone began to ring. Luke, annoyed, pointed to a sign saying "No cell phones".

Lorelai held up a finger to Luke. He sighed.

"Uh huh. Yup. Okay. Well ask Layla, she's the one who handles that stuff. Okay, bye." Luke walked up to my mother.

"Does this sign mean nothing to you?" He yelled gesturing to the sign.

"I've never seen that sign before; is it new?" She asked sarcastically.

"Bye, Luke," I said, waving as Lorelai dragged me out of the diner.

"Bye," he grunted.

"Anyway, basically everyday is movie night. We eat a lot of junk food and watch movies—when I say movies, I mean classics like Casablanca."

"Oh, Grandma showed me that!"

"She did? Huh." She sounded genuinely surprised.

Doose's market was run by this old man that thinks he's the real deal, according to Lorelai. He ran town meeting, almost every group in the town, and Stars Hollow's only Market store.

"Oh Lorelai! How are you?" A man said when we walked into the store.

"Hi, Taylor."

"And who is this?" He asked looking at me.

"Huh, you're the first person who didn't think she was Rory," Lorelai said.

"Well, she's very different from Rory! Do you not notice the difference between your own daughter and her?"

Lorelai sighed. "Taylor, this is Lucy, my other daughter. Lucy, meet Taylor Doose, the owner of this fine establishment." She said as she led me to the section full of candy and marshmallows and sugar.

"We're eating all of this?" I asked as I help Lorelai carry bags of candy and cheese doodles and pretzels.

"Yup! You'll soon learn to eat like us, precious daughter—now let's go home!"

"I like your house," I said stepping out of the jeep onto soft grass.

"It's our house now, Lucy. Please make yourself at home," She reminded as I took off my coat and hung it up. It was different then what I had grown up in. The fancy mansion with clean rooms. It felt out of place somehow.

"Mom? Did you get the stuff for tonight?" A voice called out. Then Rory walked into the living room. "Lucy?"

"Hi, Rory," I greeted quietly.

"What are you doing here?" She asked, crossing her arms uncomfortably.

"Um, I should talk about that with you quickly," Lorelai cut in. She and Rory went into Rory's room. I went over to eavesdrop.

"Rory, Lucy's going to be living with us from now on," Lorelai explained. For a moment, there was silence.

"Like she's done living with Grandma and Grandpa?" Rory asked. I rolled my eyes. Clearly that's what it meant.

"Yes. She's starting school tomorrow at the high school and...she has to stay in your room."

"What! Mom, it's going to be so crowded!"

"I know, Rory, but we have to make do for now. At some point we'll add an extension for a room, but just for now..."

"Fine," Rory grumpily murmured.

I quickly ran back to the living room, where I then put my hands in my lap and stared at my feet.

"Lucy?" Lorelai asked.

"Yeah?" I stood up and walked over to her.

She wrapped her arm around Rory and I.

"Welcome home."
