⚠️TW⚠️: Brief non graphic sexual assault
If you don't want to read the chapter, there'll be a warning before the scene and and a short summary ❤️
The last few days had been more of a challenge than other. I was living with Lisa, which—don't get me wrong—was great, but I missed my family. However, there's my pride and I definitely wouldn't be the first to cave. Lorelai had no right to look down on Jess like that and say that he wasn't good for me. I would decide who was good for me.
"Lucy," Jess whispered from behind me. We were having a test in math class and he had just snuck in.
"Lucy," he repeated.
"Shush," I scolded. "I'm thinking."
"I need a pencil."
I rolled my eyes. "I don't have one. Be quiet—I don't feel like getting in trouble today."
"Then I need a pen," he whispered, clearly ignoring me.
"You only have 10 minutes left, Jess."
"Then I need the answers."
"Jess!" I hissed. "I'm not going to help you cheat. Fine. There's a pen in my bag."
"I can't go through your bag."
I scoffed. "You can go through mine."
"My mother said never to go through a lady's bag. Or at least until you're a couple blocks away." I rolled my eyes. "That was a joke, by the way. I would never do that."
I stuck my hand into my bag, cursing underneath my breath. I dug around until I found a pen. "Here. Now shut up."
"Thanks, Sunshine."
"No problem, Stormy," I shot back.
"Now that's just plain cringe."
I shrugged. "You started it."
There was a knock at the front door of Lisa's house. I went up to open it and saw Luke.
"Hey, Kid. Your mom told me that you're staying here for right now," he greeted.
"Hey. Come in. Did she say why I'm here?"
"I don't really want to get involved in your family drama."
"Fair," I nodded. "So what's up?"
"Well, I, um. I have a favor to ask you," Luke began, nervously shoving his hands in his pockets. "So Jess had been ditching school and just—he stole their baseballs. Did you know that?" I shook my head. "Well, anyway, your principal called me in today to tell me that if he doesn't get his grades up, he'll be held back. I know you wouldn't mind that, because you two are so close and you'll have one more year together, but I really want him to graduate this year."
I nodded. "I do too." I ignored his comment about us being close.
"Yeah, so I was wondering if you would tutor him. It wouldn't be that much. I think he's good enough at everything, it's just that he skips a lot so he's behind."
"I mean, sure, I'll tutor him, but why not Rory?" I definitely wouldn't be much help.
"Well, I said before, I know you two are close."
I smiled. "Okay, I'll tutor him. Just don't blame me if he still fails."
"I won't. And it doesn't have to be an everyday thing—just get him through his next couple of tests."
