Okay. My town is all about kindness and sunshine and cuddles and all that shit, but when the Stars Hollow dance marathon comes around, it's everyone for themselves in a violent clash of moving and heel blisters and dancing 'till you're dead. It's stupid and I was glad to have no part of it. It didn't even matter if I did do it because Kirk always won every year, anyway.

"Now you're just bumming me out," Lorelai pouted as I told her all of that.

I rolled my eyes. "What are you so invested in this anyway?"

Luke comes up to our table, answering for her. "Because your mom likes to make a fool out of herself losing to Kirk every year. And I like to watch it."

"Nuh uh." Lorelai wagged a finger in Luke's face as he set down out plates. "This year I am going to get that trophy and Kirk will be the one crying when I'm running around with my trophy to the theme song of Rocky."

"Aw, it's nice to dream," I sighed, putting my hand on Lorelai's shoulder as she shot a glare me way to which I responded with a grin.

"My parents want to meet you," Ethan said at lunch.

I looked up from my meal and narrowed my eyes at him. "That's not a funny joke, Beaumont."

My boyfriend flicked a fry across the table at my forehead. "That's because it's not a joke. The great Beaumonts of Hartford wish to know who turned their precious son from a Princeton man to a New Yorker."

I winced. "You told them that you're coming to NYU with me?"

Ethan nodded. "I did—and before you say anything, I'm a hundred percent sure I want this. I mean, let's just hope that we don't break up!" The joke fell flat as butterflies spread their wings in my stomach.

I knew he meant it as a joke, but what if we did break up and Ethan threw his life away for nothing? He's disgracing his family and going against their wishes to go to Princeton...even though he just got rejected. What if we break up and his family sees him as a failure and he can't get his dream job and—

"Lucy?" Ethan asked in a worried tone. "What do you think?"

I took a deep breath and shrugged nonchalantly. "Sure. As long as you can make sure your parents don't attack me."

He gave a somber smile. "I can't promise that, but if they do, I'll defend you."

I smiled. I was so thankful to have someone that would fight for me.

In the moment, when Ethan asked me, the prospect of meeting his family seemed terrifying. But now that I was actually getting dressed and supposed to get dropped off there in less than an hour? It was a fucking surreal nightmare.

"What about the blue?" Lisa asked, pulling a strapless blue dress from my closet.

I crinkled my nose. "Too revealing."

Long sleeved turtle neck dress. "Not revealing enough."

Pink floral dress. "Too ruffly."

"Okay, you know what?" Lisa slammed her hand down on my bed where I sat. "How about you get your hair and face ready and I'll pick the outfit. You have to trust my instincts."

"Your instincts are pretty spot on when it comes to fashion," I agreed. So I headed upstairs to do my makeup and hair. I did a light makeup look with sparky eyeshadow and a smooth eyeliner look. Then I put my lucky lipstick on and started on hair.

What style would give a good impression? I honestly thought that I was worrying about my appearance too much. Was Ethan's family really going to look at my face say, "Oh, her makeup is bad", and deem me not fit for their son?...Yeah, probably.
