Rekindled friendship (unedited)

The beginning of summer had never looked so uninviting.

Especially when your best friend is two months pregnant with your ex boyfriend's child.

A lot of things had changed a lot since that night almost one week ago when Lisa told me she was pregnant. Apparently, her parents kicked her out and now she was living with us.

I was surprisingly calm about all of this. I wasn't mad at Lisa. I was mad at myself. I hadn't been a good enough friend to her and ignored her feelings. So this week I had tried to rekindle our friendship.

Lorelai was understanding enough, seeing as she related to Lisa. She let her stay on the couch and was very welcoming.

Rory was bratty about it, but I tried to ignore her.

It was eerie in a way, how calm we had gone about this. Lisa fit back into our old patterns and we basically ignored the fact that in nine months, she would be a mother.

Leo hadn't shown his face for a few days. I was still skipping school, but that's what I heard from Lane.

She also said that the rumor had calmed down, which made me worry that it would turn to Lisa. Lane said I could come back.

"Hi," Lisa greeted, walking into my room.

"'Morning."

She sat down on my bed. "Whatcha doing?"

I shrugged. "Just spending time with my thoughts...are you going to school?"

"No," Lisa scoffed. "If you think you had it bad with the psycho girl rumor, imagine what would happen to me."

I looked her up and down and could understand her worries. A month into her pregnancy, she was already gaining some weight and looked particularly dull.

"Well, you could just stay at home with me."

"Won't your mom know you're skipping school?"

I shook my head. "She won't be mad about this. Maybe if she found out I've been skipping for the past few weeks, but not this."

I got up to find, Lorelai sitting on the couch.

Something else I should have mentioned was Max had proposed to her and between Lisa being here and that, she had a very stressful week.

Rory was giggling, coming down the stairs. She and Dean had also gotten back together. She finally got her act together and told him that she loved him.

There were various moods in the room at the moment.

"Mom?" I asked.

"Hmm?" Lorelai answered, not lifting her gaze from the blank TV.

"You okay?"

"Yeah, just thinking about Max."

"Well, you don't need to rush, but I saw him at school and he kept asking me about your answer," Rory cut in.

"Really?" Lorelai asked, making a pouty face.

"Okay, before you guys get into a conversation about this, can I stay home to take hang out with Lisa?"

Lorelai sighed. "Well, it's the last day, so yes."

I ran back to my room and informed Lisa, "she said yes, so we can go to Luke's then hang out back here—or whatever you feel like."

Lisa got up and hugged me.

"Uh..."

"Thanks, Lucy, for being the best best friend I could have right now," Lisa said, her voice choked up.
