"We have to go in." Lorelai and I were in front of the Gilmore's door. We eventually would have to go in.

I looked up at Lorelai. "It's not fair Rory doesn't have to go."

"Well, when you have a three month anniversary, you can skip." Before I could say anything about how I would never have a anniversary, Emily opened the door.

"How did you do that?" Lorelai asked, looking utterly confused.

"Do what?" Emily asked. I went past her into the house and out of the cold.

"Know we were there. That door is, like, ten feet thick."

I walked into the den and sat down across from Richard. "Hi, Grandpa."

Richard looked up for a moment just to greet me then looked back at his newspaper.

"Um, thanks for letting Rory miss dinner, Mom," my mother stuttered.

"Of course! A three month anniversary is an incredible feat for her age. Or at any age for some..." Emily subtly remarked. I saw Lorelai look at her mother pointedly before getting up to serve herself a drink.

I looked back at my soda. The only think I could think about was: Today would have been my anniversary. Since Leo and I got together on my birthday, same for Rory and Dean. But Rory was the only one celebrating now.

"Hello? Lucy?"

"Huh?" Emily was looking at me.

"I asked how school was," she asked again. I shrugged and answered, "fine, I guess."

"How's that boyfriend of yours? What's his name...Liam?" I pursed my lips.

"Leo and he's fine, too." There was no point in starting a conversation about that now. I hadn't even told Mom. When she asked back at Luke's, I just said something happened with Lisa. Which wasn't a lie because it was a part of the problem. I was losing everyone I needed.

Lost in thought again, I looked up and saw Emily walking back into the room with a man.

"I didn't know it was so close!" She exclaimed.

"Right around the corner!" The man said.

"Lorelai," Emily beckoned, "this is Chase Bradford! He was just telling me that he grew up around the corner!"

I put my hand over my mouth to stop laughter from erupting. This was clearly a set up.

"This is my husband, Richard and my granddaughter, Lucy."

When he shook my hand and turned around, I gave Lorelai a—you're shit out of luck—look. She returned it with a—I'm taking you down with me—glare.

A few minutes into the conversation between the adults, Chase said, "I'm sorry your other daughter couldn't join us—I just adore children."

Shiver down my spine. Sounding like the guy who gives out candy in a white van.

Lorelai and Emily went into the kitchen to talk, leaving me with Richard and this weird man.

"So, Lucy, do you go to Chilton like your sister?" The man asked and I choked on my soda.

"Um, n-no. I go to the high school in our town," I answered.

"Yes, it didn't really work out for Lucy to go to Chilton—timing wise," Richard added.

During dinner, Lorelai made a tasteless joke that actually made me cringe when Chase asked, "Lorelai, are in the D.A.R., too?"

Halfway through a conversation, Lorelai got up to get Richard more pot roast.

"Please hurry back, I must know about this alluring Stars Hollow you talk so highly about," Chase said, making me grimace.

It was very clear that Richard, Lorelai, and I were bored out of our minds while Chase talked about the actuarial business. I was seconds away from stabbing myself with a fork when I decided to come up with a better solution.

"Can I be excused?" I asked. I definitely didn't need to deal with this right now. I needed to do something fun. Alone.

Or at least go upstairs to rest. Alone.

"Well, dinner is almost finished and we can retire to the den," Emily said.

"Please? I'm really tired."

"Don't whine, Lucy, it isn't appealing."

Then, I lost it. I don't even know why. I was in a fine, mellow mood until then.

"Who do I have to appeal? My best friend? Not talking to me. And my boyfriend isn't even my boyfriend anymore!" I grabbed my coat quickly and stormed out of the house.

Later, while I was in the car, glaring gloomily into the distance, Lorelai came and slammed the door behind her.

"What was that about?" She asked. I didn't reply.

"You know, after you left, Grandma blames this on me. Because I 'uprooted you from a stable environment'."

I felt a tear escape and I just cried into Lorelai's arms.

"Oh, it's ok baby, you'll be fine," she comforted.

"He was seeing someone else, Mom. He yelled at me in the diner then had the audacity to cheat on me!" I sobbed.

"Oh, Lucy. He's just a stupid boy. They all are. You'll date them, they'll break up with you 'cus there's "someone else", then they'll regret it once they're bored." That was one of the wisest things I had ever heard her say. A nice break from her playful quips.

"Thanks, Mom."

When we got home, Rory was curled up in a ball on the coach, crying.

"Baby, what's wrong?" Lorelai asked. Rory looked up with tear stained eyes.

"He broke up with me. Dean broke up with me."

"Rory, that boy is obsessed with you. He would never," Lorelai started.

"Well he did!" Rory yelled, then she continued to cry. Lorelai gestured me to come over to the couch. I sat down and she wrapped an arm around me.

"What have we learned today?" She asked me.

"Boys suck," I mumbled.

"Exactly. So don't let them get under your skin."

I sighed and closed my eyes. I didn't want it to get under my skin, but it did.
