Friday night dinner are already an interrogation, so I couldn't find it surprising when my family and I showed up at the Gilmores' house and Emily immediately started questioning Lorelai about her love life. Of course, I thought that maybe it was because Emily had found someone for Lorelai or she was just tired of having a daughter who thirty-three and still single. However, the reasoning was a little more unsuspected.
"So, today I went to visit the family mausoleum," Emily announced.
Lorelai turned to me. "It's never what you think it's gonna be," she shook her head.
"Keeps us on our toes," I reply then turn my attention back to Emily.
"I was just looking around," she continued, "seeing if the flowers were being treated accordingly, when it occurred to me that there is very limited space in there.
"Of course, we have slots open for Richard, me, you, Rory, and Lucy, but after that, no more room. That's it, it's full."
"Ah, I see the problem," Lorelai said.
"Yes, so if you ever take on a husband, I don't where we'll put him."
"Well, we can just dump him by the local pool hall," Lorelai joked.
"Don't be silly," Emily scolded, placing her drink on the table.
"Yes, because this is definitely not a time to be silly." Lorelai gave Rory and I a lopsided smile.
"I looked into expanding into the crypt next door, but they wouldn't talk about it—."
"I'm starting to get a little creeped out here," Rory wavered.
"Same," I added.
But Emily just ignored us. "I talked to the head of the cemetery and he suggested that we buy an annex."
"An annex?" Rory questioned.
"Yeah, you know—like an outlet store. It would specialize in all the irregular family members," our mother joked.
"Lorelai, please," Emily scoffed. "I'm just saying that if you did someday get married, then we'll have to decide who moves, that's all."
"This is such a weird conversation," Rory observed, scooting closer to me on the couch.
"Tell me about it, I had to live with them," I murmured, then my hand shot up. "Oh, oh! I want to go in the annex!"
Rory raised an eyebrow at me. "Huh? Why?"
"So I don't have to go to boring afterlife dinner parties."
"Lucy, lower your hand," Emily ordered. I pouted and put my hand down.
Now Lorelai was wearing a face that told me that she was getting to the part where she was enjoying this. "Well, if that's the case, how about Aunt Cecile? She was always so annoying."
"Mom!" Rory scoffed. "You can't just kick out Aunt Cecile!"
"Knock knock. 'Who's there?' Pineapple. 'Pineapple who?' That's where is ended! She never fully grasped the concept of the knock knock joke."
"She was a complete idiot," Emily agreed. "Okay, it's decided. If you ever meet someone and you're buried in the mausoleum, Cecile is going in the annex."
"I wanted to go to the annex," I sighed.
Lorelai rolled her eyes. "Well, maybe you can and you and Cecile can keep each other company."
"Sorry I'm late," Richard greeted, descending down the stairs. "What did I miss?"
"We were just deciding who moves to the annex," Emily explained.
