"Where are we going?" I groaned. "My feet hurt."
Lorelai scoffed. "Please. We've only been walking for five minutes."
"This new breakfast place better be good," Rory chimed in as we turned another corner.
"It will, I promise. We're almost there," Lorelai said as we continued to walk.
"Hey, guys!" Lane called at us from behind. "My god, you walk fast. I've been chasing you for the past three blocks."
"We were being followed," Rory said to Lorelai.
"Yeah. I guess you weren't being paranoid, Mom."
Lorelai sighed. "Maybe next time, you two will take me seriously."
After Lane asked her question (about practicing drums on our pots and pans), we moved on.
"Omg, you're horrible," I said to Lorelai as the mystery breakfast place came into view.
We went up to Sookie's door and knocked. She let us in and led us to the kitchen where she had eggs, bacon, fruit, and coffee.
"Sookie you do not have to do this," Rory said to Sookie, taking a bite of her eggs. "But wow! This is good."
"Don't worry. I love doing this!"
"It makes me feel guilty," Rory continued.
"Don't feel guilty, be happy! Oh, and drink your coffee before it gets cold," I quickly added.
For the next few days, Lorelai's exam papers were all over the house. She was graduating soon and stressed out about everything. Rory and I told her that it would be fine, but nothing seemed to get her to chill out.
"You'll be fine!" I yelled, closing my door and drowning out Lorelai's rambling about not being able to relax because the informations she's learned would leak out of her brain.
And as soon as it happened, it was over and Lorelai was breathing a sigh of relief. "I'm feeling so good, sisters, because it's over. O-ver. No more exams, and late night studying. It's OVER," she said, flopping down onto the couch. "Is this what it feels like to accomplish something?"
I gave a small laugh, then my phone began to ring. I left Rory and Lorelai and went to my room.
"Hello?" I answered.
"Hey."
Time stopped. I froze. I'm pretty sure my breathing ceased to be.
"Hello?" Jess said when I didn't say anything back.
"Jess?" This time, my voice came out as a squeak. I could hear his breathing on the other side of the phone and that made me want to wrap myself up in blankets and just listen to him talk to me. To hear his voice.
"Is this a bad time?"
"No," I whispered. "Hey."
I could hear his scoff. "You said that already."
"I know."
"So, how are you?"
I swallowed the lump in my throat. "Better."
"Good."
I hated this. I hated what had happened between us. How what happened was dividing us. How everything was suddenly all weird and awkward.
I cleared my throat. "And how 'bout you? What have you been doing?"
"I'm good. I've just been hanging around the city—Washington Square Park."
