The Parker house was dark and quiet. The evening sky was starting to settle over Forest Hills, but it was less tranquil than a typical summer evening would. The shadows on the inside seemed to be stronger, aggressively overtaking the spaces of light as the sun sank to the horizon. If you were to walk inside with the lights off, you could swear an apocalyptic event was drawing near. It would take a miracle to relieve you of it.
Peter opened the door and turned on the light. He dropped his key drably onto the desk to the side of the door. Following him inside were Kim and Ron. They peered inside before crossing the threshold and observing the interior. "Nice house," Kim commented.
"Thanks. It takes a fair bit of my Bugle money to stay."
"So to recap, you were bitten by a spider?" asked Ron. "And you got all the powers of one except the ability to shoot webs? How does that work?"
"Beats me."
"And you made those web-shooters on your own? How old are you again?"
"Don't you guys have a computer genius that started helping you when he was like nine?" asked Peter, trying to avoid being the subject of attention.
"He was ten actually, but Wade never made anything like this."
"I'm sure he'll get there," smiled Peter. "Would you like something? Water? Juice?"
"Oh, no thanks. We're fine. Right, Ron."
"Right, we don't want to- OH MY GOSH! BANANA BREAD!" Ron lurched forward to the small dining table where he saw a small loaf covered by a clear glass cover. He lifted the cover and swiped the loaf off its platter. Bringing the loaf to his mouth, he took a walloping bite. He smacked on his helping, allowing large chunks to fall from his mouth. Below, Rufus scurried around with his mouth open hoping they would fall inside for his share.
"Ron!" exclaimed Kim. Ron and Rufus paused and looked at their friend with stunned embarrassment. Kim gave a nasty glare, which Peter compared to "the look" Gwen had given him and Harry for years. Kim turned to Peter and apologized.
"How did you two end up together again?"
Ron answered, but the mouthful of banana bread made it inaudible.
"What?
"He said he'll take a glass of water to wash that down," said Kim, slightly irked by Ron's behavior. Peter smirked, and went to the cupboard and handed her a small glass. She filled the glass before handing it to Ron. "We met as kids in Pre-K."
"No, kidding." Peter hummed. "And the mission thing? Where'd that start?"
"My idea," said Kim.
"Ah ah! Not entirely," Ron exclaimed "She started the website, but I pushed her down this path." He took another gulp from the glass.
"Partially true."
"You guys are a very strange pair," admitted Peter.
"You're not the first to think that," said Kim, resting a hand on Ron's shoulder "Even we thought it wouldn't work."
As Peter watched them, he couldn't help but feel a fuzzy feeling rising in him, and he smiled. A year ago, he always thought that attraction and confidence was all you needed to make a relationship work. However, watching these two college adults interact with each other, it was clear that there was an understanding between them. A working companionship that was always being tested to make each person better. He reflected on his time with Liz, and thought that it was interesting that it felt more like a fun circumstance for him than a real relationship. Liz was always about the status and the cute little gestures. There was no conflict other than the instances he stood her up because he had to suit up. He wondered if any future with Gwen would be more like his time with Liz, or what Kim and Ron were like.
