UPPER EAST SIDE OF MANHATTAN
If someone had told me that I'd be waiting a whole hour outside a pub in Lenox Hill just to talk with Sandman, I probably would have laughed. Yet, here we are. What a juxtaposition my already crazy life has thrown at me. Peter sat on the stairs of a fire escape in the alley that lay behind the bar he had found Flint Marko working at. The twilight of the night was starting to give way to a starless sky as the late evening hours rolled in. Marko had said he would be off at around this time, and it was getting a little past that time. Good thing I called Aunt May and told her I was going to be home a little late. I hope its only a little. She always gets worried when I stay out to late. And that makes me worried that she's worrying. This was always a constant thought in Peter's mind. His Aunt May had been through way too much, and still is. All he ever hoped was that she could find life peaceful once more. But after losing the love of her life, her nephew acting differently, and all the bills she had to pay off, it was pretty safe to say that things wouldn't go back to the way they were, at least not within the foreseeable future. And it wasn't just his aunt that he had to keep track of, his relationships with his friends and classmates seemed to rise and drop drastically. And he knew that was all by his doing. Whether it be because of Peter Parker, or Spider-Man.
My friends! Uggh, I left them at the beach without telling them. Way to go, Mr. Superhero. You're officially the worst friend ever. The eyes of his mask squinted sadly, thinking that he had let down his friends. Without a second thought, he pulled out his phone and dialed Harry. I should check-in on them to make sure they're okay, and to let them know I'm okay too. The phone rang many times, making Peter think for a moment that they might not have survived the attack on the beach. Then, he heard the call be answered with Harry's cheerful, yet timid, voice come through the line. "Hey, Pete!"
"Hey, Harry!"
"Man, where have you been? Everyone's been wondering what happened to you." Peter slumped his head, listening to Harry's obviously concerned tone. "Yeah. See, the thing is, I wasn't feeling all too good after a while" he lied.
"Was it your head?" Harry remembered the volleyball incident. Peter softly smiled, thankful that Harry reminded him of a useful excuse for him to feel unwell. "I think so. It was probably a delayed reaction. Sorry I didn't let you guys know."
"We could have helped you, man. No matter what."
"I know, and I'm sorry, Harry. I really am."
"It's all good, man!" Harry then smiled through the phone. "I'm just glad to know that you're okay. I'm sure Gwen and MJ will be too when I tell them." He definitely sounded more chipper than when the conversation started. Also, it seemed to Peter that he must have been around a lot of people with very poppy music playing from all the noise that came behind Harry's voice.
"Thanks Harry! What are you up to now? I can hear quite a commotion through the phone."
"Oh yeah! We're all at Flash's house. He insisted that we have an end of school year party."
"Oh... wow. That sounds fun" Peter replied, a bit of his spirits dampened at the fact that he was missing out. Harry didn't seem to pick up on it, as his tone remained exuberant. "IT IS, MAN! He's got like this crazy dancing video game that everyone is doing. It is literally a rave over here. I wish you could be here to play along."
"Eh, probably better if I don't" Peter answered. "Who knows if I'll even feel better tomorrow."
"And dude, Sally and Liz said something about you hanging around Kim Possible. I mean, what's that about?" The memory of Peter interacting with Kim and Ron had totally been lost in the shuffle of thoughts involving their heroic interactions. In all honesty, it was quite embarrassing with Ron acting like he was a loser for letting Gwen go to Harry. Strange that you bring that up, Harr.
