FLASH THOMPSON'S HOUSE PARTY

Mary Jane had just come in second place in the dancing game, losing to Liz. They agreed to take a break to cool down and rehydrate. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Gwen standing all by herself watching the boys, but mostly Harry, being rowdy while tossing around a football. She figured to go over by her since she hadn't spoken with her that much that day. Plus, she was quite curious about how things went with her and Peter at the beach today.

"Hey!" she said blissfully. Only for Gwen to reply in a depressed tone. "Oh, hey." Mary Jane's eyes furrowed for a moment, surprised to see Gwen so down. "Whoa!" she reacted, "who took Glad Madame Gwen and replaced her with Downer Debbie?"

Gwen didn't say anything, and her expression didn't change in the slightest. Only a brief smile appeared, but was soon replaced with the same plain expression she had before. No longer watching the football action, she stared toward the back of the yard, occasionally looking over the side of the yard where the fence door sat closed. MJ's eyes wandered to her face, thinking that she didn't hear her. "Gwen? You in there?" she asked, waving her hand lightly to get her attention. Soon Gwen broke her thought and readdressed Mary Jane. "Yeah, I heard you."

"What's up?" Mary Jane asked. "You look super bummed out. Is everything alright?"

"It's nothing" she tried to brush off her friend's worry. "I just... just... ugh, I don't know."

"Does this nothing possibly have something to do with Pete not being here?" Harry had been true to his word to Peter about telling them that he went home for his "volleyball injuries," and now Mary Jane was wondering if Peter's absence was making Gwen feel lonely. Which it did, but Gwen couldn't help but also think about how she broke his heart earlier in the day. She answered MJ with a vulnerable squirm, showing that she was correct.

"He got hit pretty hard today" MJ continued, "It's probably better that he gets some rest."

"Yeah" Gwen said softly, her guilt practically jumping out of her body. "But what if it's not because of his head?"

MJ became more curious at this. "What do you mean?" There were no words spoken for a moment. Until Gwen shook her head in a last-minute sense of denial. "Never mind, you're probably right. It probably is head." She hoped that would disinterest the redhead, but Mary Jane was too clever for that.

"Did something happen between you two?" she questioned. Gwen sighed heavily, knowing she would have to confess what happened. MJ gave a very interested ear as Gwen's felt her insides turn with every word.

"I told him that we shouldn't try to get together."

"You and Peter?" MJ said, and Gwen nodded. "Why?"

"Because of Harry. He's a fragile spirit right now. Peter and I shouldn't hurt and betray him like that." Gwen was soft with her words, but her punctuation was clear. She had thought long and hard about every outcome. And in each one, she was breaking someone's heart. In a way, she thought that she was being strong for being there for Harry but knew that the guilt of hurting Peter would cripple her just as equally.

Mary Jane knew that she would say something like this. Heck it was the whole reason they hadn't gotten together two whole months ago when it seemed like they were on track to do so. "Gwen, I'm gonna be completely honest with you." Gwen perked her head up a bit, the same depressed expression upon her face. "As much as I love that you want to be supportive of a good friend like Harry, I don't think you should betray your heart while doing it."

"Are you saying I should be with Pete, and leave Harry?" Gwen squeaked. MJ cringed, now realizing her words were probably in favor of the route of Peter and Gwen being together. "I didn't say that, but I guess it sounded like it, didn't it?"
