Monday came too quick.
Elisha dragged herself out of bed after hitting snooze three times on her alarm. It was 6:55 am. Her mom stood in front of her door, calling her name to get up.
Her eyelids were crusted over from the tears she cried through the night. She stood in front of the mirror, her eyes puffy and almost closed shut. She began washing her face and later applied her eye mask hoping to reduce the swelling.
Her mom knocked on her door again, shouting "Let's go!"
The swelling was still there. She decided to put on a pair of sunglasses to hide it. Her excuse would be that she has a migraine and the sunlight makes it worse.
Elisha sighed. 'Why does love have to be so hard?' She thought this to herself as she got dressed and did her hair, trying to look decent.
Finally, Elisha descended the stairs.
"Whats with the sunglasses?" Her mom asked immediately.
"I have a migraine".
"Did you take Advil?"
"No"
"Well here take it" She reached into her purse and handed her a bottle. She took it and they headed out the door and settled into the car.
"You can't wear those shades in class you know" Her mom spoke.
"I know..I'm hoping the pill kicks in soon"
"How was the Barbeque?"
"It was fine"
"Why are you being short with me? What's wrong with you? You got your period or something?"
"No Mom"
"Everything OK with you and Reese?"
"...Yes...everything is great"
"Hm. That's good. Where is he planning to go for college?"
"I don't know, I didn't ask him yet"
" Well that's something to think about. Long distance relationships are not easy"
"Mom, I can't this morning, ok? My head is pounding".
"My bad. I'm sorry. Pardon me."
They pulled up to the school and Elisha got out the car, eager to escape any more questions but also dreading having to face crowded halls of teenagers.
She walked to her locker and got out her books for Mrs.Brockmire's class. The last person she wanted to see. She knew she couldn't get away with wearing the shades in her class so she checked her face in the mirror and was glad to see the swelling was gone.
She made her way down the hall, not before she saw Jason walking in her direction.
He smiled at her and spoke. "Hey. Have you seen Reese? I gotta give him his book back."
"Uh..no I haven't seen him".
It was obvious to Elisha, that Jason knew something was off about her today. She could tell by the look in his eyes. She wished he could somehow know that things weren't right between her and Reese, and strangely wished Jason could fix Reese and somehow make him understand where she was coming from. She knew this was silly. Though they hung together in a group, Jason didn't know her. She didn't know him. She was desperate for hope so much that her mind reached for irrational solutions.
"Ok. I'll see you later, have a good day." He smiled before walking away.
"Thanks. You too."
The bell rang for lunch and Elisha knew she didn't have the energy to sit with the group and pretend like everything was OK. Reese hadn't texted her since their argument. After ten minutes into lunch time, both Kendra and Larissa texted her asking where she was at.
