Kendra and Jason emerged from the lake, gathered their clothes, and slipped their shoes back on before heading back to the campsite. With the sun now gone, Kendra felt a sense of unease being surrounded by the dark woods, so she tightly clung to Jason's arm as they walked. In the distance, they spotted Colton, Evan, and Josh making their way towards them.
"There you two love birds are!" Colton smiled, looking between Jason and Kendra.
"We've been looking all over for you man" Josh said irritated. "Where were you guys? Where's your shirt?"
"We went swimming" Jason said.
Evan and Colton shared a sly smile, as they both noticed Kendra in Jason's T-shirt and Jason in just a pair of jeans.
"Where to? Cuba?" Josh joked, still slightly irritated.
Before leaving, Kendra changed into a dress she had brought with her. Meanwhile, Jason changed into a spare shirt he found in the car. Josh decided to ride back with his cousins, giving the couple a chance to enjoy some alone time.
As they drove back, the road illuminated by the headlights, Kendra felt a sense of accomplishment. She'd faced her fear, embraced the unknown, and discovered that she was capable of so much more than she had ever imagined. And she knew, with a certainty that warmed her heart, that this was just the beginning of their adventures together.
The car pulled up in front of Kendra's house. Jason got out and walked around to meet Kendra on the passenger side. As she exited, a content smile spread across his face.
"Thank you," he said.
"For what?"
" For trusting me. You did two things today, that you normally wouldn't do. Thank you for that."
She smiled feeling proud that she had made him happy "Thank you for bringing me along, it was really fun."
" So you really liked it?"
"Yea. Let me know when you go again. I want to come".
He smiled warmly. '"Alright, next time, it'll be just us."
"Ok, sounds good" she returned his smile, her eyes sparkling. "Well I'm gonna go inside and wash this hair of mine. A four-hour ordeal" she playfully rolled her eyes and chuckled.
Reaching out, Kendra gave him a hug, and he held her close. "I'll see you later" she smiled looking up into his serious green eyes.
He leaned down and kissed her forehead, their eyes locking for a moment before they pulled back. Kendra started toward the front walkway, but Jason caught her hand, surprising her.
"Look, I know there are things you wanna know about me, about my past..."He looked down at the ground, his hands tucked in his pockets, as Kendra watched him intently.
"I don't mean to shut you out. It's just... it's hard to talk about."
"I understand. I'm sorry for getting upset with you. I don't have a right to do that. I guess...I guess I just want to know you better."
"I just need some time," he said, finally meeting her gaze, "Time before I can open up."
"Okay. No rush," she nodded, her voice soft.
"I'll see you tomorrow. Keep the shirt," he said, his expression still serious.
"Okay"
Kendra entered the living room to find her mother and grandmother, Miriam and Rose, sitting on the couch, watching TV.
