Eve couldn't find the words to express what was happening inside her. She was overwhelmed, her thoughts completely jumbled. If she was honest, she didn't know what she had expected. But she certainly didn't. Perhaps it was because she had been listening to heartbreaking stories of missions for a long time and had often had to hold another man in her arms at night that these stories affected her so much.

His words were so full of sorrow that it was already tearing her heart apart. But to see him so broken and to feel the scars on his skin that he had tried so hard to hide... overwhelmed her in a completely new way. So much so that tears welled up in her eyes.

Perhaps it was also the particular feeling of connection she felt with him. She could see it in his eyes when he revealed these secrets and the scars under the black ink: he expected her to turn away. That she turned up her nose and probably reacted with the attitude: 'That's your problem, not mine. I have my own worries, so don't involve me and get out! You're no use to us that way!

And yes - there were people like that. She would have called it heartless. But she wasn't like that.

She had often been told that she was simply TOO kind-hearted. That she could forgive far too much and had to stop...

No, that didn't matter now.

Ray was suffering so much that it was choking her. Just how he flinched under her touch reminded her of herself like a distorted mirror image—damaged, flawed. Scars or burns, pushing hair over it, or getting a tattoo... what did the difference matter? They did it for the same reason: because they were ashamed. Secretly, probably also because they were afraid and hated the way most people reacted to it.

When she finally saw his shoulders shake, his eyes moistened, and he revealed to her so much of his life and the pain hidden behind the mysterious craftsman all this time... she couldn't hold on any longer.

Eve wrapped her arms around him and pulled the much taller man close because it was the only thing she could do now. She didn't think about it.

"Oh Ray... it... that... I'm so sorry..." No more than a breath because her throat was so tight she couldn't get any more out.
