Ray's pulse quickened again, and the blood froze in his veins.

He could see the turbulent ripples on the lake's water before the boy's head disappeared beneath the swaying surface.

"Shit!" The curse slipped from his lips so quickly that he couldn't swallow it.

Wild waves crashed around the jetty. Witnesses to the desperate struggle that was taking place there. The boy couldn't even scream. Children drowned quickly and silently.

"EVELYN!" he yelled as Ray struggled to his feet. Staggering, he got to his feet on the roof and rushed quickly to the ladder leaning against the gable a few meters behind him. He climbed down frantically, sliding rather than seeking a secure foothold. He took several rungs at once and finally jumped the last meter and a half to the ground. A sharp jolt went through his back as he landed and rolled onto the grass. Nevertheless, his breath caught for a moment on impact.

"EVE!" he shouted again after holding his breath with a hiss of pain. This time, he screamed louder than before for Liams mother. There was hardly any room left in his thoughts and chest for anything other than Liam. As if chased by the devil, he ran across the meadow towards the footbridge. He carelessly threw his jacket into the leaves on the bank.

Only when he stepped onto the slippery wood did he slow his pace a little - but only to avoid slipping and losing his last chance of reaching the boy in time by falling. The boards under his feet, weakened by the damp and the years, groaned loudly, but he didn't hear it. Without a second thought, he ran towards the dog and threw himself into the icy water behind Liam.

The water was like a wall of icy cold that immediately dug into his nerves and muscles. Pinpricks would not have done this feeling justice. The shock caused his muscles to stiffen as if they had been electrocuted. He wanted to move, hoping it would stop. His instincts demanded air, to suck fresh air into his lungs and save himself. Out of the freezing water and back on land.

The needles pierced his skin. They penetrated deeper and deeper and drew the warmth out of his body. Time was running out. The moments under the surface of the water seemed infinitely long. The child had been in the water for too long, and his little body was sinking deeper with every second. The clock was ticking.
