A few days had passed since his arrival at the cottage.

To Ryker's own surprise, the time out here had done him good. He was more relaxed since his arrival, and his relationship with Eve improved. Instead of frosty, it had become refreshingly teasing between them. Admittedly, the young woman also kept him on his toes: he had rolled his eyes often enough in the last few days when her blonde head peeked through the door, and his name came from her lips.

Again and again, small special tasks were added to the pending repairs: first, a broken light bulb, then a blocked drain, and finally, the warped stairs to the attic. All these little things distracted him from his car repair project or the larger jobs, so he made slower progress than planned.

But his efforts were also rewarded.

Often, a bottle of water would suddenly appear next to him on the floor, on a small table, or on the terrace. Never alone, always with a small snack. Home-baked biscuits, a warm piece of cake, muffins. Always tasty delicacies that sweetened his day, so the little special orders hardly bothered him later. To be honest, the opposite was soon the case. Sometimes, it seemed strangely quiet to him when it was quiet for a few hours or when he could no longer hear the clattering from the kitchen on the ground floor. That was also what drew him downstairs this time. At least until he caught sight of the guest.

He didn't particularly like the young man, but that was less due to his admittedly good looks than to Ray's personal and general dislike of white coats. The other reason was easy to guess: He was still a detective. He had a case to work on and had to keep an eye on the boy. That there could be another reason behind the reason why he was eyeing the guy so suspiciously ... Nonsense. Ray would never have admitted that to himself. But it was a fact: Dr Taylor was bothering him.

There was something about the guy that he didn't like. Besides, his familiarity and closeness to Eve was just... inappropriate. As far as Ray knew, Evelyn and Dylan weren't divorced yet, and she was a suspect. At least he told himself it was because he just didn't like the doctor.

In any case, he was glad when the young doctor got back into his grey car and the gravel crunched under the tires. Ryker slumped back against the frame, grumbling, and watched as the car rolled up the driveway and eventually disappeared into the woods.
