The warm wool tickled her hands as she wrapped the blanket around her son's narrow shoulders. His hair was tousled because she had dried and blow-dried it with the towel. His eyes were red and swimming with tears of guilt, which Eve met with a mixture of gentle reassurance - because he had realized his mistake - and annoyed skepticism. Inside her, emotions were simmering in a completely different way.
Heavens, she would have gone through fire and all the circles of hell to protect him. Liam was her everything and, for a long time, her only ray of hope in a grey life. She wanted to be the guide he needed, but at the same time, she felt so flawed and unworthy. All she had ever wanted was to do everything right for him.
Liam was a free spirit. Even though she would have loved to, she couldn't and shouldn't constantly coddle and mother him. She would have preferred not to let him out of her sight at all. In the first few days when they had gone away, the fear that her ex might turn up and take him away had almost driven her mad. But she didn't want the fear to suffocate him, nor her. At least, that's what she had told herself.
Until today.
Now, her fingers were still trembling from the fear that circulated like a poison in her system. She wanted to shake him so he'd never do anything like that again. Instead, she took a deep breath. There was no point in scolding a trembling, crying child. They would talk about it later. In peace. And Liam would play around the house for the next few days so the lesson would sink in.
Her thoughts were still revolving around the correct behavior. The proper lesson for Liam, without being too hard or too soft. Then Ray's voice rang out, and Eve turned round. The thoughts of grounding and ... well, all thoughts at all fell out of her hand like marbles and rolled out of reach.
The sight struck her cold and hot at the same time.
Because it took her completely by surprise... after that, she was anything but cold.
For heaven's sake - she was only human.
What young woman wouldn't have stared when the admittedly not unattractive craftsman suddenly stood half-naked in the room?
