What had he expected?

His high hopes of finally finding a lead burst like a soap bubble the moment the slim blonde woman who picked him up introduced herself as Riona O'Brien. He hadn't even arrived when he was already planning his return journey.

And then, right here and now, he stumbled across HER and the little boy. A thrill immediately ran through his exhausted body, and he couldn't help but stare at him.

The boy was the very image of his father. He had the same hazel hair and some childish but striking facial features already painted the picture of a future heartbreaker.

Only the color of his eyes and nose came from his mother. Ryker tilted his head a little, barely noticing, before a slight, warm smile crept onto his features.

Children were a wonderful thing. With their carefree nature, they always managed to win the hearts of adults. So did the little whirlwind in front of him, whose eyes sparkled innocently and enthusiastically like the stars in the sky.

This was entirely in contrast to his mother, whose expression became noticeably colder at the sight of him. But that wasn't surprising, and he could understand it. He had behaved like an arsehole with his words. He hadn't known, and for a brief moment, he wondered why Dylan had kept such an important detail from him. But even though he regretted his mistake, he couldn't give up his cover. He had to find out more.

'Concentrate, Ryker. She's kidnapped the boy. Don't get careless.'

So, the invitation to sit down and get something to eat was more than convenient. "Oh, nothing better than that." He managed to strike a carefree tone. "I could eat an ox."

As if his stomach wanted to rush to his aid, a loud growl sounded as soon as he sat on the chair. His smile slipped a little, embarrassed, while Liam and Riona giggled heartily in amusement.

"Sorry," he mumbled quietly, suppressing the urge to run his hands through his messy hair in shame. A delicious aroma from a white plate hit his nose a heartbeat later. Ray felt his mouth watering and his stomach calling out for food.
