Ryker pressed another kiss to Evelyn's forehead. She felt him inhale shakily. By now, he was stroking her all over because he needed a release for his feelings. He trailed his arms over her back, down and up her arms, and again and again, he pulled her against himself. His arm muscles twitched, and Eve suspected he wished to stand in front of Dylan again and make him pay.

She had told the whole story to very few people. Only Riona knew what was behind her journey to this place; even Grandmother Edana didn't know much of the story. But Ryker was right: he needed to hear what had happened to understand everything. And if he was going to stand up for them... he needed to know the truth so that Dylan couldn't sell him some half-truth or lies again.

She could still hear Dylan's voice in her ears as he approached and stopped beside her: 'When did you start playing my mother, huh?' His voice had a warning, growling tone. His mere presence was enough to intimidate her. 'It's none of your business how much I drink!'

Eve swallowed, her mouth suddenly feeling dry. Her heart was hammering in her chest. "Dylan said he wasn't on duty, that he was at his damn house, and that he drank as much alcohol as he fucking wanted on his own time. It was always like that. You could still talk to him reasonably when he was sober. But as soon as he'd had a drink, he was a completely different person."

This time, Ryker searched her gaze seriously. She could see a dark shadow settle over his features and darken his eyes. "The alcohol is no excuse for what he did. Not for any of it," Ryker said sternly.

Her lips curled bitterly.

"I know," Eve said softly. "I loved him for a long time," she continued, feeling Ryker flinch at those words as if she'd hit him.

But his expression softened when Eve lifted her hand and placed it over the shade of dark beard on his cheek. It must have been hard for him to hear all that.

Eve knew how tight the bonds were among Navy Seals sometimes. They were like brothers, even if they didn't have the same blood. Hearing her talk about loving another man, Dylan's betrayal, and then about the terrible deeds... it certainly wasn't pleasant. Ray wanted to protect her from this suffering ... but he couldn't.
