Eve tried to hold on to her anger about the fact that Dylan had reappeared in her life and was messing everything up. But given the events, that didn't help her as much as she would have wished.
No matter how hard you tried, feelings couldn't be controlled that easily.
The worst thing was that she couldn't tell what Dylan was capable of anymore. It was one thing to face his passive terror and see the havoc he had wreaked at the cottage. All this had spiralled entirely out of control, and Eve didn't recognise the man she had married anymore. At least she was still sure he wouldn't harm the old woman. But Eve still wanted to be sure. An uneasy feeling lay in her stomach and wouldn't be calmed no matter how much 'he wouldn't do that'.
She would have liked to have grabbed herself by the shoulders and shaken herself. Why did she still believe in some good in Dylan?
Why did she want to believe so desperately that everything here was still a series of stupid coincidences or misunderstandings?
Eve couldn't find or grasp the reason for it, nor could she explain why the pieces didn't fit with her image of Dylan. No matter what he had done and how many days she had hated him for everything...
Eve shook her head and brushed the thought aside as she climbed the last step to the attic. Although she didn't want to upset the old woman more than necessary, she still hoped that Edana might have heard or overheard something.
"Edana? Did you hear something? What happened downstairs in the living room..." she began while Eve opened the door. This time, she didn't even knock before entering. The questions poured out of her.
But Eve stopped abruptly, barely having taken a step into the room.
"E-Edana?"
The old woman was lying in bed; the blanket was rumpled, and one leg hung limply down at her side. Otherwise, she looked almost as if she were sleeping – if it weren't for the pungent smell that filled the room.
"Edana... oh my god!"
Eve stumbled towards the bed. The floorboards groaned under her steps. Her hands reached for the old woman, groped for her cheeks and then for the pulse.
