'All you get is pity,' Sally's words pounded in her head, jumping from side to side.
'Everything you own, every dollar you spend, you owe it all to me! Your home, your clothes, the food on the damn table. Do you think anyone out there - besides me - gives a shit about you? You have NOTHING! You're NOTHING without me,' the dark memory of Dylan's words intruded.
And that was precisely how she had always felt.
Like nothing.
Worthless.
But that was over now.
Eve turned her head and opened her mouth.
"Hey, pretty ladies, what'll it be?" the bartender's voice interjected, and Eve clenched her hands into fists to find an outlet. Her fingers were cold and damp, but inside, she was anything but cold.
"Eight Maple Whiskey, eight Polar Bear, and eight Rocky Mountain Bears," Eve answered so quickly that Sally couldn't get between them.
It wasn't long before the bartender pushed the tray onto the counter. The liquids sloshed in the glasses before Eve slipped the dollar bills over them and threw a "Keep the Change" because she didn't want to spend unnecessary time here. Let him keep the change.
"That won't be enough to drink you beautiful either," hissed the snake next to her, and now Eve turned back to Sally.
"What are you so scared of?"
"What?" Sally's grin slipped just slightly as she snorted snidely.
"You're acting like a stupid bitch because you feel threatened. And you want me to tell you something? I couldn't care less." This time, it was Eve who sought Sally's gaze. "I'm sick of your stupid bullshit. Silvershore is a backwater that no cock cares about. That's why I came here. I want my peace and just a good life for my son and me." And that's where it ended for her. Sally hadn't just shattered her dream. She had destroyed a new chance for Liam out of pure selfishness. "You know, I have respect for you in a way. Somehow, even if you're playing the guys."
