Ryker sighed. The rough fabric of the car seat creaked painfully in his back as Rusty came to a halt in front of the small café in Silvershore. The last few times he had visited this place, the reason for his presence had never been a good one. His arrival in Silvershore. He'd printed the files to get the information on Kaylen and Liam. Eve's conversation when it came to the bakery.

He felt like a boat that had to fight its way repeatedly over huge breakers in a storm. And now, such a monster wave was right in front of him: Dylan.

Whenever he thought of Dylan or heard his name mentioned in any context, the feeling of betrayal was still fresh; his anger at his former friend and comrade was immense—especially after Eve had told him what had happened.

The disappointment was so great that he couldn't help but wonder if he had ever really known the man who had pulled him out of the mud back then. At home, Dylan seemed to have been a completely different man.

They'd been like brothers, even without sharing the same blood. They'd known each other for many years. The missions and the experiences, good and bad, had welded them together. They each knew the man next to them. Always knowing they could rely on one another. But the Dylan Eve had described to him was a completely different person from the one he remembered from the missions.

"Get a grip, Ryker," he muttered to himself as he took a deep breath and shook his head energetically. As he turned, his gaze fell on the yellow package Eve had pressed to his chest before he'd left the cottage.

"Do me a favour and throw this in his stupid face!"

Remembering Eve's words, Ryker couldn't help but smirk slightly. Eve, or Kaylen, was certainly not the same woman he'd met when he'd first arrived here - much less the well-behaved woman Dylan remembered.

She had changed. The young mother who barely dared lift her eyes, whose soul was broken and whose self-esteem was in tatters, had become a lioness—a fighter who did everything she could to protect what was important to her: her family and her son. And Ray couldn't be prouder of her.

All that was missing now was for Dylan to finally wake up, give the dog back and get rid of the damn gifts with which Dylan was trying to turn around an already lost battle. The terror had to come to an end, and this family could go on with their lives in peace.
