The forest passed by the windows of the car in a hazy blur. Although it was daytime, the light of the autumn sun only broke through the dense coniferous trees of this forest in a few places. Evergreen spruces, firs and pines were dressed in their dark attire even at this time of year, making the surroundings appear gloomy and oppressive. Only a few deciduous trees scattered their colourful spots across the scenery. It matched the tense mood that also prevailed in the car.

Dylan felt as if he would burst at any moment under the pressure inside him. Again and again, he had to remind himself to relax his hands and not clench them into fists. When he looked at Ryker next to him, whose knuckles were white under the skin because he was gripping the steering wheel so tightly, it seemed that Ryker was feeling the same way.

It was still a thorn in his side that his former comrade, of all people, had fallen in love with his wife and was about to steal her from him... but he would endure all that rather than even the thought of anything happening to Kaylen or Liam.

Dylan gritted his teeth in anger until the muscles in his jaw ached. Whoever this sick psychopath was who was after his family and had perhaps hurt them... he would get him, and then the bastard would regret it bitterly. Dylan was not a merciful man - especially not when it came to his family.

But all this rage only distracted him to a limited extent from the gnawing fear that lay in his stomach. He had never felt like this in his life. Not even when the bullets whizzed past him, and he wondered whether he would make it home alive. All that faded in comparison to the fear for his son and wife.

Psychopaths were unpredictable. He could have done anything to Kaylen and Liam... it was even possible that he had seen the boy as nothing more than dead weight or a pesky brat and had simply killed the boy and dumped him somewhere in the forest, like garbage.

'Don't think like that. You need to keep a cool head now.'

But that was easier said than done. Dark thoughts and images pushed bitter bile up into his throat. He had seen and done many cruel things as a soldier, so it wasn't difficult for his imagination to conjure up images for his bottomless fears.
