"Happy birthday!" A choir of voices greeted me at the center, immediately plastering a stupid grin on my face. Somehow my friends had arrived earlier to my own birthday party than had. Suspiciously I eyed Gahyeon, who had placed her hand on my lower back. She was the one who had bothered me today after school, while I just wanted to go home, and apparently had bought time for the other ones to set everything up.
I took a look around the common room. They had decorated every corner with balloons and other birthday decorations. They even had set up all the bean bags around a table that had a huge cake placed on top, creating a comfortable and cozy round for celebration.
I took a deep breath and mumbled a thank you. Somehow I couldn't quite believe that the time has finally come, that I'm finally an adult (at least on paper). Looking back this day always felt so far away and in no way had I ever imagined it like this. I always thought I'd be just me and Yoohyeon, having our own little party for two. But now I look around at all the new friends I had made the past year and couldn't help but smile. This was definitely better than anything I had ever imagined. I felt tears prickling in my eyes, but quickly shoved them down. Today is a happy day. So no crying!
Gahyeon looked at me worriedly, but was interrupted by Yeontae, who made a little happy dance at the sight of the cake. "Let's eat! Let's eat! Let's eat!"
I chuckled. Gahyeon was right. Yeontae was actually a nice guy once you got to know him. He even took me aside the other day and told me he was gay. He didn't want me to think there was ever anything between him and Gahyeon, or will ever be anything more than platonic friends, and honestly, I was more than happy to hear that. I certainly felt less on edge whenever he was around now, which is definitely a good thing.
Sua joined into his little chant and we quickly settled down around the table, to make them stop.
"You should blow out the candles and make a wish." Yoohyeon suggested, taking hold of Jius' hand.
I nodded, taking a second to think about my wish. It was quite hard, considering that right now I had so much more than I ever asked for. I was happy. I was content. I was grateful for the people around me. Probably for the first time in a long time I was truly untroubled. I had found great and supporting people in my life and pushed past the ones that weren't so kind. I had freed myself from the strings that had held me down. I broke free from my chains and found happiness on the way. I guess that's what people call serendipity. Finding something truly amazing that you weren't even looking for. But now that I had it I didn't want to ever live without it.
Determined I blew out the candles, knowing exactly what my wish should be.
I grinned, while everyone cheered. Yeontae was the first to grab a knife and cut the cake, placing a huge piece on his own plate. Everyone else followed suit.
"What did you wish for?" Siyeon asked curiously.
"Hmm, not telling." I smiled wickedly, hoping that that would end the topic.
"Hey, while we eat, why don't we give you your presents?" Handong hopped up from her seat on Yeongeun, effortlessly steering the conversation into another direction.
Presents? I never really got many presents for my birthday. My parents never bothered to even acknowledge the day and I didn't even know if I had other family members roaming somewhere on this earth. It was always just Yoohyeon and her mom that even bothered to get me something. It was usually just something small. I knew they never had much money to afford something big, so I was always grateful they spent the little money they had for me.
But today Handong came in carrying a whole pile of wrapped boxes and placed them right in front of me. This was insane. "Mine is the letter on the bottom." She whispered, before she went back to sit on Yeongeun's lap.
