"I want you to marry him, Megha."

Biren looked at his daughter.

"You can't be serious." She muttered in disbelief. I mean, her reaction was natural. I could feel her eyes on me, but I just couldn't look at her.

'Megha pl-" He began to cough.

"Baba please, take some rest. We can talk later." She tried to divert the conversation. I guess even I would have done that. But then again, I am sure I would have tried to think from the other perspective too.

"I am serious, Beta. He has agreed." Biren coughed again. There was blood on my hand.

God! What had I done? I made his patriotism cost him his whole life!

"I have something very important to tell you, Agastya." Biren jogged to me. Even though old, the ex-policeman still had it all in him.

"I am not sure about the organization, but they are planning something huge. Very huge. They are after our people and peace." He further added. He filled me with the rest of the details, where he found them, how they work.

"The ones I am with now are doing this for money. They don't care who wants to do this. They don't care about what will become of the state. And they don't even know what to do if things go south." He took a long sip from his tea. "I think I will be able to help you."

"I don't think you should involve yourself."

"I have nothing to lose, beta. I miss working for the people." He let out a fond sigh.

"You would be a great help, but I cannot compromise on your life."

I was not ready to let him in.

"I will be fine. You will see me with no scratches on my body." He fixed his hair, showing off his boyish charm.

"Have I ever won against you?" I shook my head in defeat. He laughed loudly.

And then, two days before we were going to take him down, Biren came to see me.

"To beat around the bush, do you remember my daughter from childhood?" He gave me a teasing look.

"I fear I have a terrible memory." I grimaced.

"I am sure you will find some traces of her. Why I am here is because they are dangerous people. They have been tracking my movements. They have followed my daughter too. If something goes wrong, will you marry her?"

The condition didn't seem as huge. We were all going to be careful of him. And considering what he was going to do for us, this was the least I could have done for him.

"I would, yes."

"Life is uncert—" He coughed again. More blood poured in.

I did agree to marry her. I would have to take the responsibility.
