"...they just leave you with memories that haunt you for the rest of your lives."

And she broke into a sob but tried to keep it in.

Why so hard, dear life?

Before I knew it, I pulled her closer to me. I wish I could do something to reduce or just completely diminish her pain.

Her wails grew a bit louder as her grip tightened on me. It was just so painful to see her in so much pain. I felt so helpless and...I just don't know.

I remember caressing her back and whispering sweet nothings in her hair till her sobs got even, and I could feel her heavy breaths against my neck.

As it all fell silent, I realised she was crying for too long. It was too much. I felt terrible.

I pulled away a bit. She looked so peaceful and serene in her sleep except the tear marks on her face.

I tucked her hair behind her ear. She hummed in her sleep and moved closer to me. I held her again.

She couldn't say goodbye to her father because of me. I am responsible for her pain.

Fuck!

It was my fault.

It was a series of thoughts that had no end, no consolation.

"Stop moving so much." She mumbled as she kept her hand on my face and fell asleep.

I focused on her breaths against my neck to sleep, and it worked.

God, I know you are somewhere up there. If there is forgiveness for what I did, please forgive me.

"Agastya!"

Can a man not sleep?

"Agastya!"

I forced my eyes open, and she was looking at me with her puffy eyes. She looked...beautiful in the sunlight.

Damn! This woman is destroying my discipline.

"Good morning!" Her voice was a bit groggy.

"Good morning." I let my hand run through her hair. "I am losing my discipline because of you. I used to wake at four in the morning irrespective of everything."

"That was sleep deprivation and not discipline, in your case." She furrowed her brows slightly.

"God! I give up."

I turned away from her. She lifted her head from my arm with a giggle.

"So you are saying, I defeated a soldier? Hah!" She plopped on her elbow and rested her head on her hand.

"Yeah! Boo-hoo." I rolled my eyes at her.

"By the way, my exam is in two days from now." She stifled a yawn.
