E N T E N G
It was Friday. She must be preparing for her date by now. I remember how her smile looked as she asked Damon out this afternoon. She still looked beautiful like she always did. I sighed. I am a hundred per cent sure I don't have a chance with her anymore.
I stopped my car by the road and got out of it only to find myself at my mother's house. Before I can even knock on her door, she already opened it with a worried look on her face.
"Honey, what's wrong?"
I hugged her tightly. "I think I lost her forever now, Mom. She's moving on already. She's having a date tonight, and it's not with me anymore." I felt my chest tighten with the thought of her dating a different guy on a Friday night. I might not feel like this if I didn't know the guy. But it was fucking Damon Olivares. Who doesn't want someone like him?
She tapped on my back and pulled me inside. I can smell the familiar aroma of chicken curry as we sit in the dining area. She gave me a plate and put on rice and some of her chicken curry.
"Eat up then we'll talk."
I did as she said and had another plate of it. Great now I have to work this out twice.
"So...what happened?" She asked as she sipped some tea.
"I saw Hera yesterday and she asked Damon out on a date today. Friday night has always been our date night." I brought out my phone. "Look, I still haven't removed the reminder of our date night. We sometimes had impromptu dates because I miss her company during the week." I subconsciously played her drunk video like I always did for the past nights whenever I missed her. "Zeus misses her. I miss her." I felt the familiar pain in my chest when I heard her laughter from the video. "Damon was right." I turned off my phone and slumped on my chair, hope slowly slipping out of me. "I love her and now the thought of losing her is so..."
"Painful? Numbing? Crushing?" Mom sighed and tapped on my knee. "Enteng, listen to me. When you were young, you were the sweetest boy I knew. Up until now when you grew older, your charisma knows no bounds. Everyone around you loves you. You care for people like it's your second nature. But I also know that whatever upbringing your father made you experience gave you the idea that you are never enough. You were brought up by your Father in a tough environment that I was never able to shield you from. You always felt like you needed to work twice as hard as the others and even then, you might not get what you wanted. That you never deserve things if ever it goes your way." Mom's eyes softened. "She loved you, Enteng. She must have loved you for her to be this hurt. C'mon, tell me. What made her fall for you? What did you do to make her love you?"
I swallowed the lump in my throat. "I call her hot-torney even if she hates it. I gave her a plushie so that she would always think of me before she goes to sleep and whenever she wakes up. I had to look for the best burger joint to take her to because she loved our burger dates. I gave up bourbon and other alcoholic drinks for her because it reminded her of her abusive father. I let her sleep on my neck even if her breath tickles me. I like driving her home even if she can drive herself because it means spending more time with her. I look up a recipe in advance and try it out a few times before our Friday night dates so that it's perfect once I cook it with her."
Mom unclenched my hand I didn't was clenched so tightly. "I knew you made her fall in love with you without you knowing."
"It started out as a mutual agreement. We were never meant to date for real. We didn't believe in love. But then I learned the things that make her smile and somehow, I do it just to get a glimpse of it."
"You may be a grown man now but you are still that sweet boy doing things secretly to the people he loves. Enteng, what's stopping you from telling her that you love her?"
"I'm not...good enough for her. You know her. You've seen her. She's the most perfect woman out there. A lot of men have asked her out and will probably ask her out now that she's in the market."
"You're not the judge of that. Hera is. Her heart is. Don't make the choice for her, son."
"She's angry at me now. She's moving on just like I told her. She fell in love with me, a privilege she never let other men have, and I just wasted it...threw it in her face. I'm such a bastard. An asshole. This is why I don't deserve her, Mom."
Mom sighed and sat beside me. Her arm went around my shoulder as she laid her head on me. "Go back to her, Enteng. Tell her what you just told me now. Don't think about what she'll say after. Just tell her the things that made you love her and made her love you. Let her know everything. Then whatever she says after, accept it. Don't give up on her, Enteng. She's a good woman. I didn't see you pining after a woman like her but I'm here for it."
"What do you mean by that?"
"C'mon, Enteng. You know what I mean. You complement each other. You have the energy of a golden retriever, a dog I should have gotten you instead. And she is like an Afghan Hound if you know what I mean."
I chuckled. "You did not just compare us to dog breeds, Mom. And maybe that's why Zeus isn't a fan of you."
It was my Mom's turn to laugh. "What I mean is, she calms down the excessive energy you have. Puts you back on track. While you pulled her out of her box and started enjoying life." She squeezed my hand. "Enteng, if you ever get a chance to be with her again, promise me...fall in love the right way. No contracts. No reservations. Give it all."
"Can I really do it, Mom?"
"I know you can. I didn't raise you to be a loser."
I smiled. "Thanks, Mom. I'm sure you'll know if I'm doing great. She's your lawyer after all."
She chuckled. "I knew why I liked her the first time I met her. I was thinking who to introduce her to between you and Enchong."
"I'm sure Enchong will visit you soon, Mom. I'm not the only one who fucked up. But that's his story to tell."
"Go get her, Enteng. Find your happiness, son."
I nodded and as I drove on my way home, I texted Hilda to prepare a few things for me.
