E N T E N G
"Oh, are we expecting somebody else?"
I followed her eyes and it looked like the other people were there already. My mother arranged for lunch today and I thought it was just Hera and me. I see two other cars parked in the driveway.
"Let's go and see shall we?" I have a hunch on who the additional visitors are but I have to see for my eyes.
The house smells divine with the aroma of various foods in the air. I can smell Mom's familiar biryani and buttered chicken. I wonder what else she prepared for us.
My eyes darted to the form coming out of the kitchen. My smile immediately carved my face. "Hey, twinnie."
Enchong nodded at me and Hera. "Long time, no see." Enchong kissed Hera on the cheeks. "You look well." He returned his eyes to me. "You look like you need more grovelling."
I chuckled. "Working on it, dickhead. How about you?"
As if on cue, Diosa walks out of the hallways and spots us immediately. She looked the same as the last time I saw her with her brown locks but she's now wearing her usual colorful antique printed dresses. "Hey guys! We've been waiting for you!" She rushes to hug me and Hera.
She's still blushing when she returns to Enchong's side.
I smirked at my twin. "I know we're twins, Enchong which means you also look like you need more grovelling."
"Make that three."
We all turned towards Dad who was coming in from the garden, flowers in his hand. Mom grabbed the small bouquet and looked at us.
"My house never had this many people before."
Dad, Enchong and I exchanged glances before smiling at Mom. "We can have this every week."
Enchong cleared his throat. "Sorry to disappoint you but I might be moving to Switzerland within six months. I'll make it a point to come here as often as my schedule allows."
"For good?" I say as I delicately pull Hera to my side her hand resting on mine.
Enchong looked at Diosa as he answered. "For good." My eyes squinted at them to confirm my suspicion but before I could open my mouth, Enchong spoke again. "No...we are pretty much on the same boat as you guys. I am still waiting for Diosa to accept me again. I'll make it work for her though. I can sleep on the plane if it means being with her every week."
Mom has her hand on her chest as if she can't believe her son is saying those words. We feel the same. A year ago, Enchong would never settle with anyone, same with me. But I guess meeting the right woman will really change everything even the plans and promises we made since we were children.
"We should start eating before the food gets cold."
The dining area was already fixed and as expected, the table was filled with heaps of food. Mom sat at the centre with Dad on her right. Hera and I sat on her left while Enchong and Diosa sat beside Dad. Diosa and Hera engaged in their own conversation like Mom and Dad. Enchong and I just ate quietly, listening to their stories.
I glanced at Mom who was watching us. Happiness is definitely evident in her eyes. I realized now how long it had been since I saw her like that. Radiant and glowing. Enchong also glanced at Mom before to me.
"How are you doing, son?" Dad asked, his eyes on me.
"Good," I say curtly. While our relationship is still strained at the moment, I can feel him trying to reach out to me.
"I heard you went to Australia recently."
I nodded. "I did. I visited a friend who could help me put up Horizon Capital. We will be opening soon and will be fully operational hopefully by the end of the year."
Dad nodded with a small smile on his face. "I'm proud of you, Enteng. I never thought you'll resign from the company but I guess your passion is not in line with our company. Your brother and I are here to support you. Whatever you need."
I felt Hera squeeze my knee under the table. She gave me a small smile. I turned to Dad and smiled at him. "Thanks, Dad. You can start by giving me half of your assets now."
Dad chuckled and shook his head. "It's your mother's now."
I still don't know where the annulment stands at this point. I haven't asked Mom or Hera if it will still push through. My parents look happy...happier than they've been. Maybe my Dad retiring will do them both a favour.
"What are you doing now, Dad?"
He shrugged. "Whatever your Mom wants."
My eyebrow cocked at my mother who was smiling shyly at the centre of the table. "We might travel around the country."
"That's great. About time you enjoy your own country, Dad."
Mom asked Enchong, Dad, and me to clean up the table and do the dishes while they went to the garden and had some of their tea and cookies.
"I wonder what your employees think of their tyrant CEO washing the dishes right now?" Natatawang sabi ko habang nagpupunas ng pinggan.
"They better not think of me at all or they're fired."
Dad and I shook our heads. Maybe Enchong has not softened up like we thought he would once he settles down with someone. He turns into this mushy, lovesick puppy when Diosa is with him. Turns out, when she's out of range, he returns to his dark side.
"So, you guys are settling down?" Dad asked us as he leaned on the counter watching us.
"I'm waiting for Hera, obviously. If she still wants to do something in her career, I'll let her. If she wants to get married, fine. I would have married her yesterday."
Enchong chuckled. "Diosa is just living her life. But it's up to her when she wants to settle down or not as long as I'm the one she settles down with."
"You'll be giving us grandchildren soon then."
"Hera likes kids. She's good around her friends' kids. I bet she wants kids and will move heaven and earth to give them the best life." Enchong nodded and I could sense something that he wasn't telling me. "Are you not able to father children?"
"I can. I think my soldiers are competent. Thank you very much." He sighed. "Diosa doesn't want kids of her own. She has...reasons."
"And what do you think of it?" I asked my eyes trained on Dad. He made sure Enchong would give him an heir especially now that he is the chief executive.
"Her body, her choice. She told me about it before we started going out again. It's a take it or leave it." His eyes switched between me and Dad. "I'm thinking of getting a vasectomy. I haven't told her yet and I know she'll be heartbroken by it because I need to undergo this for her and she doesn't really want me to." He wiped his hands on the towel. "But it's for her, Dad. She's my life now. Besides, there are other ways to have kids. Talent and skill can be learned and developed. We can adopt or Enteng can let me borrow one of his kids."
I threw my towel at him. "My future kids are not things, asshole. Hera will have you by the neck before you can even move out of the door."
Enchong remained smiling. "I know. But it is non-negotiable. I love her. I will give anything to make her happy. Kids are the cherry on top..more like a good to have at the moment. Just want to let you know so you don't bombard Diosa with questions that will upset her."
"I understand..." Dad nodded, still absorbing the information. "I have a hunch why and if that's the case I fully understand. The company is in good hands and I know you won't let it fall into the wrong hands."
Enchong smiled genuinely. "Thanks, Dad. That means a lot to me."
