Sans didn't expect a visitor. And truthfully, he didn't really want to deal with people.

"Lady Toriel! I did not expect you to be here so late!" Papyrus exclaimed after opening the door for the former Queen. He then looked down and his smile grew further.
"Oh! Frisk! And you too!" Papyrus gave the small human a high five after seeing their hand raised.

It was meant to be a wave, but oh well.

"As wonderful as it is to see you, Papyrus, Frisk was looking for your brother. It seemed urgent." Toriel explained. It did seem urgent, because Frisk rarely spoke and when they did, it was for something important.

"All right, your majesty. I'll go and collect the lazybones at once!" He said, saluting like a solider. "In the meantime, come inside and sit!"

Papyrus darted to one of the few rooms inside his cabin.

Papyrus picked out his cabin personally. He felt quite attached to it, despite only seeing it once. Maybe it was because of its shape vaguely resembling his house in Snowdin, or how the logs were a slightly lighter colour than the other cabins around it.

While Frisk pondered, an exhausted Sans stumbled into the room where they were waiting.
"sup tori. heard someone needed me" Sans said with a weak smile before crashing onto the cushioned seat opposite them.

Frisk took a seat beside him.

"you alright, kid?"

Frisk took a deep breath. Their plan was to get straight to the point.

"Do you know something, Sans?" They asked quietly, a lack of emotion in their voice.

It only took one slight glance for Sans to get a read on them. They emmited worry, confusion, a droplet of fear but one thing stood out amongst the rest. Hope.

"care to elaborate?" Sans asked with false confusion. In reality, he expected something like this. His discovery was bound to change the way he acts. He had verged off the script and the kid was too observant to not notice.

He didn't plan to tell them anything.

"I know that you know about my power and maybe something more." They spoke again. This time, they made eye contact. "The humans won't let us stay, Sans. We have days." They spoke again after a short pause.

"you went back." Sans answered quickly, his tone switching from relaxed to annoyed.
"This is on you to fix." He finished with his eyes staring down the child without any colour but a deep, dark black.

No one else heard any of the words shared between the child and skeleton. They didn't see the way Sans snapped, or the way Frisk flinched, either.

"hey papyrus, if ya don't mind im gonna head back to bed." Sans said with his voice returning back to its full volume. He wearily got back up and staggered back to bed.

As for Frisk, they stayed on the seat for a moment. Sans had spoken in such a way that he gave zero answers and yet...

"you went back"

He didnt say it in surprise. He didn't say it like "Oh? You went back?"

No.

He said it in a way that implied that he already knew...

But he shouldn't know.

Sans didn't reach the door. He stopped. Because, despite him happy that he had a small talk with the kid, he didn't feel satisfied.

Especially when he snapped like that at a child who was trying to do right...
