Some time ago today...

Alphys stared at the monitor, wondering whether what she was about to do was a good idea. She already saw some of it, but never delved any deeper. In fact, she almost didn't believe it. That one day, a long time ago...

What Sans said confirmed it.

"yeah, you keep that to yourself."

He snuck it in so well, so subtle. Made it seem like nothing.

...

Her notes didn't take long to gloss over. Maybe an hour, maybe less. She didn't even spend too long on them anyway, less than a day. But, being here, alone in her lab - after finding out what Sans had been messing around with and the obvious trust Asgore held. And...

"yeah, you keep that to yourself."

Could she really keep it to herself? When she didn't even have the full picture yet?

Alphys looked at the monitor, shining bright blue in the dark. The royal records were already loaded, but she hadn't opened it just yet.

One day, years ago... when she had became Royal Scientist and had officially been given full clearance to the lab, she enthusiastically went through everything. Everything she had access to. Scavenging all sorts of new information, keen on gaining knowledge and doing her job to her highest potential.

She thought over those days, a keen scientist, yet to make mistakes. How she longed to be as buzzing and innocent as back then.

One day, not long after her appointment, she decided to open that file. The Royal records.

It must have been a mistake. Her having full access to the files must have been a mistake. She should have only had the science division files. Still, for a while, she put curiosity to the side and only opened what she should have had. Still, she never told Asgore the problem. But, it was calling her. Nagging. She wanted to know what was there.

That day, she opened the files and delved just a bit deeper. So many files to choose. Explicit, intricate detail on so many things. Previous royalty, former Royal Scientists and their projects. Captains of the Guard and their profiles, missions. But, maybe fortunately, most of the information was already public knowledge. Still, she went further and further.

Judges. The record read. She was curious, she thought the job was vacant. Maybe it was. But... last edited two years ago? When Gerson retired almost a decade ago?

She curiously opened the file. It listed data about the first, the second and the third.

"Sans?"

Sans? As in the random skeleton who visited the lab every now and then? The one in Snowdin who was strangely adapt at using the mechanisms in the lab? She already knew of his lab clearance, but him as the Judge? The strongest monster in the underground? Now. That had to be wrong.

But, underneath the listing were pictures, data and information. She didn't read it, she couldn't. Because this wasn't public knowledge. She went too far.

Her first mistake of many, in hindsight, was going that deep in the first place.

And now, she stood thousands of feet higher. And she felt the need to go back and find out what those records truly said about the seemingly harmless skeleton. Whether he could actually deal with an impossible threat as the notes suggested. She opened the files and skipped through everything. She found the right record quickly.
