Mabel's POV
Mondays! Wheew! I had dashed out of the house this morning after kissing my mom goodbye and leaving my closet in a mess. The whole weekend I had worked tirelessly, from my laptop to my i-pad, then to my phone. I wasn't really that hardworking ––only looking for a distraction from everything. My divorce.
My day started with a cappuccino that was made to my taste by my secretary. Bright light from the sun streamed through the glass walls to my modern office space. I had paced around my office from time to time, running a hand through my hair in frustration, I only messed it up. I decided to seat on the couch, legs crossed and laptop on my laps, on the table –No. I walked around with my laptop, reading through an inbox in my mail, still uncomfortable. Then I placed the laptop on the table and finally sat behind the desk, that was after I unwrapped a bubble gum and shoved it into my mouth, tossing the wrapper and it landed on my table.
Uneasy really lies the head that wears the crown. The mahogany desk that I worked with was a mess, files and paperwork lying around. On it the plaque was lying carelessly and not in place. I continued to type furiously on my laptop, eyes focused.
Ada strolled in after a soft knock on the door that I didn't answer to. My head snapped up to glance at her after the familiar scent of her perfume wafted into my nose. Her hair was stretched in a short bang, silk black shirt with a few buttons undone and white pants with black heels to match.
She gasped, feigning surprise to see more typing on my laptop and scrolling through some slides.
"Are you working?" Ignoring her question, I ran a hand through my hair which was regrettably in the same style as hers. She dragged me to the salon on Saturday and we ended up getting the same hairstyle.
Ada loomed over me, standing in front of me with hands fastened to both ends of the table. She blew out a sigh.
"Listen sis I know you're very enthusiastic about work and everything but it's thirty minutes into lunch break and I'm pretty sure you didn't grab breakfast before leaving home."
A groan stirred up in me. I forgot that I worked with my mom.
"I'm busy Ada, can't you see it?" My eyes quizzed as I tried not to sound irritated.
Her arms folded across her chest, face was forming a frown.
"I can see that Mabel, we all have work to do but we also remember to take a break." She paused probably waiting for my mood to soften so I could budge. Ignoring her I steadied my gaze on my laptop, continuing my work.
"Besides I need a partner, I can't eat alone." Her voice sounded like that of a five year old, innocent and sweet.
I blew out a bubble with the gum, shutting down my laptop and closing it. "You could have just said that." When I looked up at her, she had her lips in a pout, her eyes bulging and lashes batting.
Grabbing my jacket from the stand next to me, I draped it over my shoulders from behind. "You're buying, just so you know."
Dramatically, she rolled her eyes and scoffed. "Fine, just for today."
My fingers reached for my black Prada bag lying carelessly on the table and my phone next to it.
Ada stood by the door waiting for me, when I approached she opened the door and I stepped out, hearing the door close as she trailed after me.
