I walked into at work a few minutes late, but no one really cared. Even Tobias didn't acknowledge my presence until a few minutes after I arrived in the door. He finally looks over at me, eyebrows furrowed.
"Where have you been?" he asks me. His eyes set back on his conouter monitor.
"Talking with Will," I say, nonchalantly.
His head jerks toward me and he asks, "What?"
I could tell he got a little jealous. "Yeah, you know we hung out. Then he kissed me." Before he could react, I laughed letting him know I was kidding.
He shook his head, smiling. His eyes went back to the computer screen. "He better know that those lips are mine and only mine."
I blush furiously and don't respond, hoping he'll inquire further.
"Seriously though. What did you two talk about?" he asks.
"What do you think? Christina."
"Ah," he says. "So what's their deal? He cheating on her or something?"
"No, actually. Quite the opposite." I say vaguely.
"Oh, really? How so?"
"I really shouldn't tell you," I say. "You'll find out soon enough."
"Really Tris?" he says. "Can you please stop saying such vague things? It's driving me crazy."
"Oh, so there's a double standard here. You say vague things all the time and the second I start it's not okay?" I tease.
He chuckles. "But in all seriousness please tell me," he says in a low voice. "I can keep a secret, Tris."
"Fine," I say, reluctantly conceding. "But just don't tell anyone."
He nods intently.
"Okay, so apparently he's been putting in extra shifts so that he can give Christina a promise ring."
"Really?" he asks, intrigued by the idea.
"Yeah," I say, smiling. "It's really sweet of him. I can't believe that we thought he was cheating."
The rest of the day passes with almost no surprises. That is, until Zeke announces that we will be having a party in his apartment tonight.
"Yup! Be there or be square!" he says.
"Or be a triangle, it doesn't matter," Victoria says.
The two of the start giggling at each other, all cute and smiley.
Out of the corner of my eye, I see Shauna walk away. Tobias seems to notice it too. He briskly walks after her down the hallway, away from our little gathering in the hallway outside the Pit. Before I know it, I'm following after them.
As I turn the corner, I see Shauna in tears. "Does he not know how much it hurts me?" she asks hotly.
Her tears make her eyes puffy and cheeks wet. I stop dead in my tracks and both of their heads turn toward me.
"Tris," Shauna says, noticing me with surprise.
"Uh," I say. "I can leave."
"No," she says, her voice strained. "It's fine, you can stay."
I hesitantly moved closer toward the pair of them as Shauna went on. "Can't he tell that I've liked him for the better part of 4 years? Each time he gets a new girlfriend, I'm not upset because he likes the girl. It kills me each time because he overlooks me yet again!"
