I remember the days where I would sit at the dinner table, submissive as I watched my parents converse. I remember their interlaced hands and the mutual smiles that would pass between them. More specifically, I remember the day when they taught Caleb and I about true love.

"You never know who you'll love in life until you do. It comes fast and hits you and you'll never know what's happened until it's too late. And when you truly do, there's no doubt in the world that you would want to spend your life with anyone else. Your father and I found that love, and one day, the two of you will as well. There's nothing more that I could wish for in life."

I remember the small smile that lit up my mom's face when she told me that. I was about eight at the time. The next morning, I packed up my backpack and headed over to Erudite for school. I passed by a older boy, about ten years old. His hair was dark and his face was hidden and guarded as he whisked to his next class. Tobias Eaton, Marcus Eaton's son. I never knew it would be him I fell in love with. I never could have even guessed it when I saw the older boy walking through the halls or coming over my house for dinner on occasion. And when I did love him, I loved him with every piece of me.

As the sun begins to awake me in the morning, I turn burying my head into my pillow. It was soft yet hard at the same time. This was no pillow. I smiled, pressing a kiss to Tobias's chest. My legs were wound up with his as I wore his shirt. "Morning," I whispered softly, my words floating on air.

He was fast asleep and I smiled. Today was the day before the final test; the initiates had a break. Knowing this, I cheerily stood up from the bed and left a note for Tobias letting him know I was going over to Christina's.

I quickly got dressed and left the house, wearing a short sleeved black shirt and black leggings. "Tris," I hear a deep voice call out from behind me.

I raise my eyebrows, turning around to be greeted by Max closing in on me. "Yes?" I ask, slightly nervous. I haven't spoken with him for a very long time, and I begin to wonder whether he knows something about the Divergent in our group. Or even worse, about me being Divergent.

He surveys me. "I was looking for you. Where is Four?" he asks.

I raise my eyebrows. "Back at the apartment, why?" I inquire, trying my best to have my voice sound flat.

"I have a proposition for the two of you. As you probably know, Nessley took the jump yesterday."

I nod, I had heard the news that one of the leaders, Nessley jumped into the chasm. He was old and was having trouble getting onto the trains. "Yes, yes I did hear that," I say, slightly relieved.

Max looks around, "We'd like to offer the two of you position in Dauntless leadership."

My eyes widen, and I'm shaken. "Dauntless leaders?" I ask.

"We know that Four has turned down the opportunity to be recruited several, but we were counting on the two of you would come onboard. Eric's position has been compromised," he says, his voice incisive. It almost unnerves me. "I'll give you a day to get back to me."

He walks away briskly after giving me a curt nod and I stand there, not able to move. Becoming a Dauntless leader? Getting to give Dauntless a chance to be what it was founded to be? Find a way to save all the elderly who were getting the boot? I'd give that opportunity for the world. It beat staring at a computer screen at video footage in the control room for sure.

But would Tobias agree? Every piece of me doubted it, but I had to get him onboard. I wouldn't take the position without him there. So what would happen if he declined? Someone else could be recruited. Even Peter, possibly.
