RYAN'S POV
"Your existence was the curse that ruined my life, Ryan. My life is so much better now that you left. So if you really want me to be happy, then stay away forever. Just make sure you become your fathers only heir—"
My breathing became labored. I struggled to find air, gasping until I finally jolted awake. Sweating profusely, I brushed my damp hair back and turned to check the clock.
3 a.m.
My heart was pounding relentlessly in my chest, each beat louder than the last. I reached for my pill container but froze when I saw it. Empty.
Panic surged through me. I had just been at the hospital yesterday, but I forgot to refill my prescription. Hastily, I found the lone pill remaining and threw it into my mouth, swallowing it dry as I tried to calm myself down.
I sat there for a while, attempting to steady my breathing.
When I lay back down, hoping for a few hours of rest, the nightmares came back—Anna's accident this time. I saw it all again, every vivid detail haunting me like a ghost I couldn't escape.
I bolted upright, sweat pooling around my temples. It was no use. Sleep was impossible.
I texted my assistant to pick up my medication first thing in the morning, then grabbed my laptop to work instead.
For years now, I could count on one hand how many nights I had actually slept. It's no surprise my health is declining—this insomnia, these nightmares—they are eating me alive.
They started as early as I could remember, even when I was just six years old. Back then, I used to believe growing up would somehow bring happiness. How naive I was.
DIANA'S POV
Why did there have to be so much work today of all days—the day Nuella was coming?
Finally, I was done checking the stock of drugs. The nurses had packed them into the van to be transported.
Almost all the drugs we had were expired. The previous matron, Maddie, had been nothing short of a criminal. She collected procurement funds but never purchased anything with them.
Luckily, the issue was flagged during yesterday's board meeting. Matron Linda had taken swift action, ordering new stock to replace the expired ones. The board also took decisive measures—Maddie was arrested.
We were instructed to dispose of the expired drugs, but it was infuriating to think about the harm that could have been caused.
Still, where is Clara? I hadn't seen her all morning.
I stepped outside, and sure enough, the Grande family was there. It seemed Nuella would be arriving any minute.
Excitement buzzed in the air. Every nurse, doctor, and even the patients peered around corners, trying to catch a glimpse of the famous Nuella.
Then it happened. A sleek black car pulled up, and Nuella stepped out, her black sunglasses obscuring her eyes.
Wow. She was stunning.
Nuella was always known for her natural beauty, but today she wore just the right amount of makeup. It suited her perfectly, complementing the graceful, confident aura she exuded.
She walked with a model's elegance, every step deliberate and commanding. Her bodyguards followed close behind, adding to the spectacle.
Moments later, another car arrived—the Dervantes family. They greeted the Grandes before moving toward Nuella.
But where is Ryan?
As if on cue, Ryan's car pulled up. He stepped out, keeping a subtle yet deliberate distance from his family, one you might not notice unless you knew him well.
I watched him closely.
I had known Sir Ryan for years now, but I had never seen him share a friendly moment with his parents.
They said he ran away from home when he was six.
And if that story was true, I couldn't help but wonder—why?
