the smell of earth after rain

Upon hearing Jaha's words addressed to the 100 delinquents, Athena couldn't suppress her excitement. The prospect of descending to the Earth's surface filled her with anticipation.

Soon, she'd feel the texture of leaves, the rough bark of trees, perhaps even encounter wildlife. Her daydreaming was abruptly halted by thunderous cheers. Amidst the commotion, she caught a fleeting glimpse of someone appearing to float around the dropship.

"Is he an idiot?" she muttered. Octavia let out a laugh and responded with a resounding affirmation. Amidst the cheering, other sounds joined in—the metallic screeches of machinery—and the brunette gripped her seatbelt tightly.

Suddenly, the dropship accelerated, hurtling towards Earth as if in a race. Athena's fear escalated rapidly. The ship picked up speed until it collided with the ground in a sudden crash. With her eyes still shut, she cautiously opened them, glancing down at herself. The seatbelt had shielded her from harm.

The machinery whirred quietly, overshadowed by the chatter of the delinquents. Eager to disembark, everyone scrambled out of their seats towards the door. Caught up in their excitement, Athena unclasped her seatbelt. Beside her, Octavia struggled with hers, prompting Athena to swiftly assist her, earning a thankful smile from the younger girl.

Together, they rushed towards the door, pausing as the voices of two people in argument reached their ears. Suddenly, the girl next to Athena exclaimed a boy's name and darted into his arms, embracing him tightly.

As whispers began to circulate among the other prisoners, Athena slowly grasped the identities of the two figures locked in the embrace before her. Stunned, she observed as they separated, with Octavia attempting to fend off the gossiping murmurs. As she glanced around, her eyes met those of a man in a guard's uniform, causing Athena to pause momentarily.

She couldn't help but notice his undeniable handsomeness, and she felt a sudden rush of shyness wash over her. Admitting to herself that she wasn't particularly skilled at maintaining eye contact, she quickly broke it, redirecting her attention elsewhere.

Realization dawned as she acknowledged the identity of her newfound friend. As she watched Octavia step onto the ground and inhale deeply, Athena's mind raced with memories of her journey up until today and the day she was arrested.

Doubt clouded her thoughts as she pondered the wisdom of continuing the friendship, especially considering the Blakes remained unaware of her past. She had no intention of revealing her history anytime soon.

Peering out the door, Athena was struck by the vibrant greenery stretching before her, a wave of relief washing over her at the sight of Earth's colorful landscape.
