an ache for distant places

Throughout the day, Athena kept a close eye on Jasper, tending to him with care while Octavia assisted. Their friendship deepened as they bonded over shared interests, finding comfort in each other's company. Amidst caring for Jasper, they enjoyed chatting about gossip and discussing who they found attractive. Octavia ended up telling her about Atom and they both giggled about their interactions.

As night fell, Jasper's condition worsened, his moans of pain disturbing the sleep of the other delinquents. Frustration boiled over, and Athena feared someone might take drastic measures to silence him. Tensions escalated when Bellamy stormed into the dropship, issuing threats to the suffering boy.

Octavia had stepped in to cover her shift, looking after Jasper, prompting Athena to seize the moment for one of her long-awaited solitary adventures. Her days had been consumed with caring for her friend, leaving little time for herself.

During one of her solitary walks, she stumbled upon a lone little girl. "Why are you out here all by yourself? It's not safe, you know," Athena expressed her concern. Before the girl could respond, the air was pierced by the thud of an axe embedding into the tree beside them.

Athena instinctively pushed the girl behind her, her heart racing with fear, thinking it might be a Grounder attacking them. However, her tension eased as she recognized the all-too-familiar voice. "I almost killed you. Why aren't you back at camp?" the voice said.

Relief flooded Athena as she saw the freckled boy standing before her. For the first time in her life, she was genuinely relieved to see him. "Are we not allowed to do anything without your permission anymore, Freckles?" she quipped, a mixture of sass and gratitude in her voice.

Atom emerged from behind Bellamy, his eyes scanning the two girls. "There's Grounders out here. It's too dangerous for little girls," he warned. Before Athena could retort, the nameless girl piped up, "I'm not little." Bellamy then proceeded to hand her a knife. "But you can't hunt without a weapon. Ever killed something before? Maybe you're good at it," he said with a smile.

Athena couldn't contain her frustration. "Are you absolutely insane, you idiot?" she muttered to Bellamy as they walked together, making sure Charlotte couldn't hear them. "She is a child, and your first instinct is to give her a knife?" she quietly yelled at him.

"Calm down, Bambi, it's no big deal. She'll learn how to protect herself," Bellamy reassured, his tone casual despite Athena's concern.

Resigned to Bellamy's stubbornness, Athena decided not to waste her breath trying to change his mind. Perhaps, she thought, it was better to have Charlotte armed than defenseless.

As she walked alongside the newfound companions, she glanced back to check on Atom, only to be met with a creeping yellow fog inching closer towards them.

"Uhm, Bellamy?" Athena's voice rang out, filled with uncertainty as she observed the ominous sight before them. Turning around, Bellamy's instincts immediately kicked in, sensing the danger of the encroaching fog, amplified by the deafening horn echoing through the forest. Without hesitation, he took Athena's hand, urgency flashing in his eyes as he yelled, "Run!"

Athena's heart raced as she realized the gravity of the situation. Gripping Bellamy's hand tightly, she bolted forward, her instincts urging her to flee. With a swift movement, she also grabbed Charlotte's hand, pulling her along as they sprinted through the forest.

"Come on! There are caves this way!" Bellamy's urgent voice pierced through the chaos as they dashed towards the safety of a large, grey cave. Once inside, the echoes of the forest faded, replaced by the eerie stillness of the cave.

A male voice echoed through the cave, screaming Bellamy's name. Without a moment's hesitation, Bellamy dashed back outside to search for Atom.  But as he emerged, he was met with a choking cloud of yellow fog.

Athena's concern peaked as she watched Bellamy struggle. Acting swiftly, she grabbed his arm and pulled him back into the safety of the cave. "Bellamy, Atom is going to be okay. You can't stay out here," she urged firmly, her voice laced with worry.

"You won't be any help to Atom if you end up getting yourself killed"
