a cry of sorrow
Athena stirred from her slumber as someone gently tapped her shoulder. Blinking sleep from her eyes, she found Charlotte and Bellamy already prepared to depart. "Hope you guys haven't been standing there watching me sleep," she quipped, a hint of amusement in her voice. "Why didn't you wake me up earlier?"
Attempting to return Bellamy's jacket, she was met with a shake of his head, indicating that she should keep it. "We thought you should get some rest, considering you seemed very tired , based on your snoring," Bellamy chimed in mischievously.
"Hey! I don't snore," Athena protested, though she knew Bellamy was just teasing. With a grin, he left the cave, prompting Athena to follow the two, the jacket draped over her shoulders.
As they stepped out into the bright sunlight, Athena squinted against the bright light , waiting for her eyes to adjust. Meanwhile, Bellamy called out to his friends, his voice tinged with concern. "Anybody out here? Jones?"
They heard Jones's response and hastened towards him. Bellamy visibly relaxed upon seeing his friends were safe, but Athena's keen observation didn't miss the absence of someone important. "Where is Atom?" she asked, her voice carrying a note of worry.
Jones shrugged his shoulders, and Bellamy and the brunette exchanged anxious glances, realising that the boy was missing.
As they pressed on in search of the missing black-haired boy, Athena's heart sank when Charlotte's piercing cry shattered the silence once again.
Bellamy reached the scene first, finding Charlotte standing over Atom. Rushing to their side, Athena quickly assessed the situation and instructed Charlotte to return to camp immediately, her tone firm with concern.
Turning her attention to Bellamy, she found him kneeling beside the injured Atom. Placing a comforting hand on his shoulder, Athena looked down at the pained boy, feeling utterly helpless in the face of such a harrowing situation. She had never encountered anything so distressing before, unsure of what to do next.
"Kill me. Kill me. Kill... me." the boy on the ground whispers to the two standing over him. Athena's heart clenched at Atom's agonised plea, his words haunting the air around them.
Uncertainty and dread hung heavy between her and Bellamy as they stood over their suffering friend. Before they could act, Charlotte approached, handing Bellamy a knife with a solemn reassurance: "Don't be afraid."
Athena's concern deepened as she watched the young girl intervene in such a grave situation. With a heavy heart, she urged Charlotte once more to return to camp, knowing this was no place for a child to witness such pain.
Despite her own uncertainty, Athena knew they had to act swiftly to help Atom, but the weight of the decision pressed heavily upon her shoulders.
Athena's heart ached as Atom's plea grew weaker, his words fragmented with pain. Seeing Bellamy's hand trembling, she gently took the knife from him, her own resolve firm in her decision not to let him bear the burden of killing his friend.
Before Athena could formulate a plan of action, Clarke's voice cut through the tension " I heard screams". Relief flooded her as the experienced leader approached, her presence bringing a glimmer of hope to the situation.
Kneeling beside the wounded boy, Clarke's steady demeanor instilled a sense of calm amidst the chaos, as Athena silently prayed for a solution to this heartbreaking dilemma.
As Clarke leaned down to assist Atom, Athena felt a mix of gratitude and sadness wash over her. She watched in silence as Clarke skillfully eased the boy's suffering, her hums offering a soothing melody in his final moments.
Feeling the weight of the moment, Athena's grip on Bellamy's shoulder tightened involuntarily, seeking solace in his presence. Sensing her distress, Bellamy gently clasped her hand, offering silent reassurance.
Together, they stood vigil as Clarke provided comfort to Atom in his final moments, her gentle presence a balm to the pain and fear that had gripped them all. And as the boy's life slipped away, surrounded by the warmth of Clarke's song.
As they walked back to camp in silence, Athena found herself instinctively falling back, joining Bellamy behind her. She turned to him, her concern evident in her voice. "Are you okay?" she began, but then corrects herself "Are you going to be okay?"
Bellamy met her gaze, his expression heavy with grief and uncertainty. Despite his attempt to reassure her with a quick nod, Athena could see the pain etched in his eyes, knowing that healing would take time.
Arriving at the camp, they were met with the task of laying Atom to rest. Jones gently placed his body on the ground. Wells approached, understanding the gravity of the situation without a word needing to be spoken. "I better go get this grave dug," he murmured.
Athena's heart sank as she watched Octavia approach, knowing the history between her and Atom. Bellamy's expression darkened as he realized the situation, his concern evident as he braced himself for the conversation ahead.
Octavia's arrival brought with it a sense of urgency, her words cutting through the heavy atmosphere. "It's about time. They're gonna kill Jasper. Did you get the medicine?" she demanded, her voice laced with anxiety and desperation.
Clarke, ever the leader, attempted to intervene, guiding Octavia towards the dropship with a gentle hand. "Yeah. I... I got it. Come on. Let's go talk," she urged.
Athena watched with a heavy heart as the tension between Bellamy and Octavia reached a breaking point. Bellamy's plea for his sister to stay back was met with resistance, his words falling on deaf ears as Octavia pushed past him to approach Atom's lifeless form.
"Octavia, he is right," Athena interjected softly, her voice tinged with regret as she tried to diffuse the situation.
She disregarded Athena's words, pushing Bellamy's arm away to reach Atom's side. With a cry of anguish, she lifted the jacket off his body, revealing her former crush beneath.
Athena could only watch in silence, her heart aching for the pain that consumed Octavia in that moment, knowing that words could offer little solace in the face of such profound loss.
"There's nothing I could do." Bellamy desperately tries to argue , but Octavia just leaves.
"She'll come around, Bellamy. She's grieving. Give her some time," Athena reassured him gently, hoping to offer a glimmer of hope. Realizing that Bellamy needed space to process his emotions, Athena made her way to the dropship.
As soon as she climbs up the ladder , she hears Octavia coughing. Athena's concern deepened as she caught sight of Octavia holding a bottle of moonshine.
"Disgusting. Love it," Octavia muttered, at her attempt to cope with her grief.
Fearing the consequences of Octavia's actions, Athena swiftly moved to intercept. " Where on earth did you get that from ? " Athena walks over to Octavia and grabs the moonshine from her hand.
Before Octavia could respond, their attention was diverted by the sound of Jasper's voice."Can I, uh, get a hit of that?" "Jasper" rushing to his side, both brunettes greeted their friend with a mix of relief and concern.
"Welcome back, buddy," Finn greeted Jasper with a smile. "I have never been so glad to hear someone request alcohol before," Athena admitted with a relieved chuckle, earning a smile from Jasper as they settled in together, finding comfort in each other's company amidst the turmoil that surrounded them.
"Was that a dream or did I get speared?"
