to wander longingly through the forest in search of mystery
After what felt like an eternity trudging through the forest, Athena couldn't help but wonder why Clarke insisted on dragging her along. She had been matching Bellamy's steps for hours, while Clarke led the way.
Finally, they stumbled into a part of the forest that could barely be called such anymore. The trees and the ground appeared lifeless.
Athena realized, as they walked, that she had forgotten to pack rations. However, one look at Bellamy's enormous stash made her feel slightly relieved.
Thank goodness she wasn't hungry yet; she really didn't want to have to awkwardly ask Bellamy for snacks.
With food in her mouth, Clarke casually remarked, "You know, the first dropship is gonna come down soon. Pretty sure you can't avoid Jaha forever." Athena's gaze snapped to Bellamy at Clarke's words.
It hadn't even crossed her mind. She'd been so preoccupied with thoughts of the Grounders that she'd neglected to consider the arrival of the Ark, a potential threat to Bellamy, considering his history with Jaha.
"I can try," Bellamy responded, drawing another doubtful glance from Athena. "So what exactly does this bunker look like?" she asked, attempting to steer the conversation away from the uncomfortable topic.
"The depot is supposed to be around here somewhere," Clarke vaguely replied, sidestepping Athena's question. "There's got to be a door," Bellamy chimed in, providing a more direct response. Athena nodded her thanks as they split up, each heading in a different direction.
As Athena gazed at the ground, she suddenly heard a loud rustle. Startled, she spun around, scanning the area for any sign of movement.
Seeing no one, she spotted Bellamy in the distance, his concerned eyes locked on her. He mouthed, "Are you okay?" and Athena gave him a thumbs up in response.
As she resumed her search, her foot caught on something, sending her tumbling to the ground with an "Ouch." Rubbing her sore nose, she glanced back and then scrambled to her feet, excitement bubbling up.
"GUYS!" she yelled out. "I found something," she added more quietly as she grasped the metal handles and pulled, but they wouldn't budge.
Hearing her call, Clarke and Bellamy rushed over. "Watch your foot," Bellamy cautioned, gently pushing Athena aside.
He wielded his axe, striking the handles repeatedly until finally, with a grunt of effort, he managed to pry the door open.
Clarke wasted no time taking the lead, descending the stairs into the darkness. Bellamy followed suit but paused when he noticed Athena lingering outside. "You okay?" he asked, his brow furrowing with concern.
"I don't like this," Athena admitted vaguely, her gaze fixed on the ominous darkness beyond the doorway.
"We'll be right back out. We won't take long," Bellamy reassured her, his voice steady as he tried to ease her anxiety.
As Athena hesitated at the top of the stairs, unsure of what lay ahead, Bellamy extended his hand to her.
She looked at him hesitantly, but the softness in his eyes reassured her, and she reached out, intertwining her fingers with his as they descended together.
With each step into the darkness, Athena's grip on Bellamy's hand tightened. The lack of visibility made her uneasy, and she found herself murmuring, "I hate this," over and over again.
But Bellamy's comforting touch, his thumb tracing circles on her hand, offered some solace, reminding her that she wasn't alone.
"Do you really think this place hasn't been touched since the war?" Bellamy's voice broke through the darkness.
"A girl can dream," Clarke replied, producing flashlights from her backpack and handing them to Athena and Bellamy. "Come on."
"This place is disgusting," both girls exclaimed simultaneously, their sentiments echoed by Bellamy. "Anything left down here is ruined," he concluded, his voice tinged with a hint of resignation.
Bellamy released Athena's hand to grab a light stick, tossing it onto the ground. With more light flooding the space, Athena felt her panic subside. She joined Clarke as the blonde called out excitedly about finding blankets.
"That's great. Maybe we won't freeze every night now," Athena remarked, reaching for one of the blankets.
"Excited about a couple of blankets?" Bellamy's tone turned sour, and Athena felt a pang of offense as she withdrew her hand.
"Well, it's something," Clarke interjected, coming to her own defense.
"How about a canteen or a med kit or a decent fricking tent?" Bellamy's frustration boiled over, culminating in him kicking over a drum. Athena took a step back, watching as liquid spilled across the floor, accompanied by loud noises.
"What was that?" Athena grabbed Clarke's arm, her heart racing with apprehension.
"Oh my god," Bellamy's voice held a note of excitement. Athena released Clarke's arm, her curiosity piqued, and approached Bellamy, who was now kneeling over a cache of guns. He looked up at them with a grin, holding a sizable firearm in his hands.
"Oh, thank god we finally have a chance at surviving," Athena breathed out, relief evident in her voice as she gazed down at the guns, mirroring Bellamy's smile.
"This changes everything. No more running from spears," Bellamy concurred, his agreement echoing Athena's sentiments. Meanwhile, Clarke busied herself stuffing items into her backpack.
Athena joined Bellamy on the other side of the room as they inspected the contents of the remaining drums. "It's nice seeing you smile, even if it's at the sight of guns," she remarked as she popped open one of the drums.
"I'm just glad we can finally protect ourselves," Bellamy replied, the smile still lingering on his face at their discovery.
"You know what, let's give it a try," Bellamy declared, grabbing one of the red blankets and marking a big black cross on it before hanging it up.
As the two girls observed him, he turned to them, a determined look in his eyes.He asked, a spark of excitement igniting in the air.
"Ready to be badasses?"
