something lovely discovered by chance

Athena let out a big yawn, feeling the weight of exhaustion as she glanced around at the other girls, who barely had their eyes open. After talking to Bellamy, Athena had spent the entire night playing games with the rest of the delinquents, trying to ignore the fact that sleep brought only nightmares—of Wells, Atom, Murphy, and countless others.

"I'm never drinking again," Harper groaned, massaging her temples as she battled a headache.

"Keep lying to yourself," Monroe countered with a smirk.

The girls had grown closer, forming a tight-knit friend group that spent nearly every moment together. As they recounted the events of the previous night, a group of guys walked by. One blonde guy looked at Monroe and gave her a shy smile.

"Looks like someone made an impression," Athena teased, nudging Monroe with her elbow.

Monroe blushed slightly, but rolled her eyes playfully. "Oh, please. Like I'm the only one who got a smile last night. But yeah he's cute"

"You know who's cute too?" Harper giggled, glancing around to see if anyone was nearby. "Monty." The girls continued to giggle.

"Your turn, Fox," Monroe laughed. Athena was laughing along with the girls, glad to have a friend group to distract her from all the sadness that was seemingly engulfing her.

Fox looked around, checking the area before leaning in. "Bellamy is really cute," she giggled. Monroe and Harper joined in with their own giggles.

Athena's heart skipped a beat at Fox's words. She felt a sudden, inexplicable pang of jealousy. Bellamy had been on her mind more than she'd like to admit, but she hadn't realized why until now.

Hearing Fox call him cute made her chest tighten, a feeling she quickly tried to suppress. Athena forced a smile, trying to join in the laughter, but the discomfort lingered, gnawing at the edges of her consciousness.

"Yeah, Bellamy's definitely got that whole brooding hero vibe," Monroe added, winking at Athena, who managed a weak smile in return.

As the conversation moved on, Athena found herself lost in thought, trying to make sense of her feelings.

Athena spotted Bellamy in the distance, engrossed in conversation with Connor. She completely blanked out of the girls' conversation as she continued to stare at him.

"Earth to Athena," Fox waved her hands in front of the brunette's face. Following Athena's gaze, she nudged her lightly. "Who do you find cute?"

Athena's mind scrambled for an answer, not wanting to reveal her true thoughts. "Oh, uhm..." She looked around, settling on a safe option. "Jasper is pretty cute," she said with a smile, hoping to divert attention.

"He really is," Harper chimed in dreamily, prompting laughter from the rest of the girls. Athena chuckled along, relieved to have dodged the question for now.

After a while, the group dispersed in different directions. "Hey, I was looking for you," Raven approached Athena. Surprised, Athena turned around to face her. "Why?" she asked, puzzled.

"I'm working on some bullets and could use your help," Raven explained. "You sure you mean me?" Athena queried, still unsure.

"You helped a lot with the flares, so yeah, I definitely mean you," Raven reassured her with a smile. "Okay, sure," Athena agreed, having no other plans anyway.

She followed Raven into a tent where Raven began showcasing the tasks she needed help with. After a while, Athena had it all figured out.

"See? I knew you could do this," Raven complimented Athena, affirming her capability.

After a while of working in silence next to each other, Raven spoke up, her tone serious. "I need to ask you something," she said. Athena felt a pang of worry at the seriousness in Raven's voice. "Sure, go ahead," she replied, trying to hide her nervousness with a shy smile.

"Is there something going on between Clarke and Finn?" Raven's question caught Athena off guard. "Oh," Athena responded, not expecting this question at all.

Raven's impatience was evident as she raised her eyebrows, awaiting an answer. Athena hesitated before responding, "I don't really know, to be honest."

"Athena, please," Raven pleaded, her desperation evident. Athena sighed, feeling the weight of Raven's concern. "Look, Raven. I honestly have no clue. But I can tell you that there isn't nothing between those two," she finally answered, turning away to avoid seeing Raven's reaction.

"Hey, hey! There you are! All right. Listen. We're playing drunk ball. I bet Monroe my team's gonna win the Unity Day title," Jasper exclaimed as he approached Athena.

"Hey Jasper," Athena greeted him, not bothering to turn around. She could immediately tell it was him by his energetic voice. "What do you think? Must be better than whatever you're doing."

"We're checking the gunpowder in these rounds so that if the Grounders try to kill us all maybe we can get a few shots off beforehand," Raven explained, which Athena was grateful for, as she had no idea what she was doing anyway.

As the three joked around with each other, someone entered the tent. Athena barely noticed as she was focused on the bullet in front of her. Suddenly, someone grabbed both sides of her arms, attempting to scare her.

Startled, Athena's reflexes kicked in, causing one of the rounds, just like Raven's earlier, to explode. She turned around to see Bellamy in front of her.

"You're an idiot, Freckles," she said, feeling apologetic toward Raven for the mishap. His eyes sparkled with amusement as he watched her reaction, his freckles seeming to dance in the dim light of the tent.

Raven let out a half-amused, half-exasperated sigh at the unexpected explosion, but she couldn't help but chuckle at the sight of Athena's flustered expression. "Remind me not to sneak up on you next time," Bellamy teased, his tone playful as he released her arms.

Bellamy turned around to Jasper, his expression determined. "Jasper, you're coming with me." Athena's brows furrowed in confusion as she looked between the two boys.

"I am?" Jasper asked, clearly surprised. "You handled yourself well in the cave with the Grounder," Bellamy explained. Jasper scoffed, "I mean, I hit him in the head."

Meanwhile, Bellamy stood beside Athena, reaching for random bullets. She quickly intercepted his hand, stopping him. "What do you think you're doing?" she questioned, a note of concern in her voice.

Raven chimed in, her tone serious, "If you're planning on shooting anything, you better think twice. We haven't checked those yet."

"Give me some bullets that work," Bellamy demanded, his tone resolute. Athena hesitated for a moment, then handed him a handful of checked rounds.

"What for?" she pressed, her concern evident. "Raven's boyfriend is being an idiot," Bellamy explained tersely.

"Aww, you're twinning," Athena teased lightly, attempting to diffuse the tension. Bellamy shot her a glance, but she just chuckled, trying to lighten the mood.

"I'm coming with you. Athena, stay here and keep working," Raven instructed as she left the tent. "What—" Athena started, her words cut off as she turned speechless. Bellamy laughed at her stunned expression before he left the tent.
