I walked into my first period Biology class and took a seat at the only empty table that happened to be in the very back of the room. That was perfect for me because I hated sitting up front.
"Good morning class," the teacher said in a monotone voice. I looked up to see a middle aged, chubby brunette woman standing in the front of the room, wearing a long, black dress.
"I'm Miss Rumpkin and this is Human Biology," she told us without even a hint of a smile. "In this class we're going to study the anatomy of the human body and what makes us who we are and what we are."
A few minutes later, Takashi Chang strolled into the classroom with his signature cocky swagger, looking completely unfazed by the fact that he was late, slipping his dark sunglasses off and running a hand up through his hair as he looked around the room. He was tall and skinny, but muscular, with shaggy jet black hair and dark eyes hidden under thick eyebrows.
Seeing that he was in my class made my heart skip a beat and my mouth gradually fell open without me even realizing it, from being totally in awe of his handsome face. He was gorgeous, but also completely unattainable for someone like me.
He was one of those guys that was so ridiculously perfect he didn't even seem real. He was smart, handsome, popular, rich, funny ..... at least, everyone said he was funny. I had never actually had a conversation with him to know if he was or not.
Sophomore year his family had moved to Seattle from Japan to open up a chain of high-end Japanese sushi bars and nail salons. I could still vividly remember the first time I saw him from across the crowded cafeteria. I couldn't take my eyes off of him. I had been secretly crushing on him ever since.
I had hoped I would have at least one class with him this semester and now here he was, walking into my Biology class. He didn't even bother to give the teacher an excuse for why he was late. He just strolled right past her, walking in my direction and that's when I suddenly became aware of the fact that the only empty seat left in the entire room was the one right next to me. I swallowed hard, holding my breath and feeling my heart beating faster as he got closer, moving in what felt like slow motion towards me.
The smell of his expensive cologne filled my nostrils as he slid into the seat beside me and slouched down low, pulling the hood of his hoodie up over his head and crossing his arms over his chest, stretching his long legs out in front of him.
Takashi wasn't the typical brown-nosing overachiever that Lake Forest Academy was chock full of. Even though he got good grades, he was known for getting into fights with anyone and everyone that would actually dare to fight him. I had never personally witnessed it, but the rumor around school was that he was a really, really good fighter.
The teacher started talking again, breaking me out of my thoughts. "This semester we're going to be studying human DNA and how different combinations of recessive and dominant genes interact to make us who we are. Why would two brunette parents have a red-headed child? Why would two short parents have a tall child? We'll talk about all that and why we each look the way we do."
