Colton and I stood there between the exits of the boys and girls locker rooms waiting as football players came out of the boys' locker room with big duffel bags slung over their shoulders and their hair wet, because they had just gotten out of the showers and cheerleaders came out of the girls' locker room with sweatpants on underneath their skirts, carrying their backpacks and pom-poms.
"So you're seriously not gonna tell me who we're waiting here for?" I asked, with my arms crossed across my chest.
"No, but I bet you can guess," he said, with a smile.
"Caitlyn? Why?"
He shrugged. "Oh just a little thing I like to call revenge," he said with a mischievous smirk. "Oh wait. There she is, don't look," he whispered. "Just play along."
He cleared his throat as he looked down into my eyes, before saying loudly, "So, I know this all started out with us just pretending, but I ummm, I sort of have a confession to make."
"A confession?" I asked.
He smiled softly as he said, "Yeah, it's not pretend for me anymore Syd. What I'm feeling is very, very real."
"What are you feeling?" I asked, swallowing hard.
He hesitated, reaching up and brushing some hair out of my face with his fingertips and giving me a warm smile before telling me, "You know, I ummm, I think I might be falling in love with you."
My heart skipped a beat at hearing those words coming from his mouth, even if he didn't actually mean them.
He started leaning in towards me and I held my breath and started to close my eyes, anticipating a kiss.
"Ummm. EXCUSE ME?!" someone shouted from beside us, interrupting the moment. We both turned our heads to see Caitlyn standing there with her hands on her hips and a disgusted look on her face. "You're kidding right?! Where's the person recording?" she asked, looking around.
"What are you talking about? Why would someone be recording us?" Colton asked her, looking confused.
Caitlyn looked back and forth between me and him with her nose wrinkled up. "Because this HAS to be a prank. There's no way in hell you'd turn ME down so you could hook up with HER, like for real?" she scoffed, laughing.
"And what if I did?" he asked, wrapping an arm around my shoulders and pulling me to his side. "Would that really be so hard to believe? Sydney's a better person than you'll ever be. On the inside, where it matters the most, you're the ugliest person I've ever known."
Caitlyn laughed sarcastically, looking at him like he was crazy. That was probably the first time anyone had ever called her ugly in her life.
"I'm serious," he told her. "And I think the cute, nerdy, librarian look Sydney has going on is really sexy. Honestly, being smart is the biggest turn on."
"Oh please!" Caitlyn scoffed, rolling her eyes and shaking her head, clearly still unconvinced. "The words Sydney and sexy should never be used in the same sentence," she laughed.
"No it's true, but that's not the only thing she has going for her," Colton continued. "Unlike you, she's actually nice, she appreciates the things I do for her and when she laughs at my jokes, it's genuine because she actually understands them. And on top of all that, she's also just a good person that I enjoy being around."
Caitlyn looked at me and then back at him, looking like she was trying to analyze us, before finally asking, "Are you actually serious? You two are together for real now?"
Colton nodded and slipped his hand around my waist before saying, "Yeah, at least, I want us to be. If she'll have me."
I smiled softly as I looked up at him and said. "Of course I will."
