"I've gotta go shower and change in the locker room. Will you be okay waiting here for a few minutes?" Colton asked. "I won't be long."
I looked around at his teammates' girlfriends that were eyeballing me suspiciously, before telling him, "Yeah, I'm sure I'll be fine. You go ahead."
After that, him and his teammates walked away, leaving me standing there alone with six cheerleaders that were glaring at me with their arms crossed across their chests. They sure weren't going out of their way to make me feel welcome.
Lily, a short, pretty brunette who was wearing a really high ponytail on top of her head with a big bow on it, said, "I thought Caitlyn was supposed to be like your best friend or something. That's pretty freakin' shady of you to start dating her boyfriend the day after they broke up. I mean, who does that?"
"Yeah," one of the other girls chimed in. "That's REALLY messed up. I'd flip out if my best friend did that to me."
I just stood there, not really sure what to say. It wasn't like I could tell them that dating Colton was Caitlyn's idea, not mine. It took a minute, but I finally came up with something.
"Well, I mean, she's the one that broke up with him and I ummm, I talked to Caitlyn first and made sure she was okay with us being together before anything happened between me and Colton. She said she just wants the two of us to be happy and gave us her blessing."
"Are you sure? That doesn't sound like Caitlyn at all," Lily said, looking back at her teammates behind her and they nodded in agreement. My lie obviously wasn't very convincing.
"Ask her yourself if you don't believe me. She's right over there in the bleachers," I told them, pointing to where my three best friends were sitting, watching us. I waved at them and they waved back.
"Fine. I will," Lily said firmly, glaring at me as she turned on her heel and then flipped her hair in my face before stomping her way towards the bleachers, followed closely behind by the rest of her little minions.
I let out an exhale, feeling relieved that they were gone and that conversation was over. I didn't like confrontation. My house had so much yelling and screaming growing up, that I avoided it as much as I could.
I quickly pulled out my phone and sent Caitlyn a text, letting her know what I told the cheerleaders so she wouldn't be blindsided by their questions and would know what to say.
Then I was left standing there alone in the middle of the football field, waiting for Colton to come back. It wasn't too long before the guys emerged from the locker room with wet hair, wearing normal clothes. Colton walked out onto the field towards me in faded dark blue jeans, a tight white t-shirt that showed off his muscles and tennis shoes.
His friends followed behind him and when he reached me, he turned to them and said, "We've gotta go. I'll umm, I'll catch you guys later." He walked forward and slipped his hand into mine, before leading the way towards the parking lot.
I had never held a guy's hand before and it was kinda freakin' me out because it felt weird that my first time was fake. I didn't pull away though because I did agree to do this, and if we were gonna convince people we were a couple, we had to act like one.
Then my mind started wandering. What if my hand started sweating and grossed him out? What if his started sweating? Ewww. Just thinking about it made my nose curl up in disgust.
I looked over and noticed he was acting cool as a cucumber, walking with his shoulders back and his head held high, giving the people we were passing by a nod of his head and a smile. He didn't seem to be freaking out about holding my hand at all.
