You know the old saying fake it til you make it? Well my best friend took that a little too seriously. Caitlyn came up with a crazy scheme to help me finally get the guy I had been crushing on for three years. Her plan was a little unorthodox to say...
The next morning I was woken up by the sudden loud sound of a blow-dryer. It took my brain a few seconds to remember I was at Takashi's house, sleeping in his sister's room.
Akari was apparently blow-drying her hair in the bathroom that was attached to her bedroom and she had left the door wide open. I blinked and rubbed my eyes, stretching my arms over my head with a groan as I slowly sat up and looked around.
Akari poked her head out of the bathroom door and looked at me.
"Oh you're awake?" she asked, sounding surprised, as if she didn't know loud noises wake up sleeping people.
"Yep, I'm awake," I said in a gravelly voice, giving her a forced smile.
After a few minutes of drying her hair, she clicked the blow dryer off and walked out of the bathroom, brushing her long, dark hair. She sat down at her vanity and flipped the lighted mirror on before starting to put on her makeup.
"You know, my brother's never invited a girl to sleep over before. Usually he just sends 'em home after he gets what he wants. I hope his little booty call was worth it though, cause my parents are gonna blow a gasket when they find out you stayed over. They're really old school."
"Booty call?!" I said, busting out laughing. "Oh no, no, no. It's nothing like THAT," I told her, shaking my head. "I came over here to work on our biology project and when we got done, Takashi didn't have time to give me a ride home cause he was already running late for some party he had to go to. Me and him are just friends." I scrunched my brows and said, "At least, I think we're friends. We may not even be that."
Akari finished dabbing her foundation on with a little bright pink sponge, before turning her head to look at me, saying, "My brother doesn't have girls that are just friends. I don't think he's capable of it."
I let out an exhale and nodded. "Well, then I guess we're not even friends," I said quietly, feeling disappointed.
I watched as Akari brushed on some eyeshadow and swiped liquid eyeliner across one of her eyes. She looked so pretty.

"How did you get so good at makeup?" I asked.
She shrugged. "I just watched Youtube videos and then went out and bought the products they were using and practiced a lot."
"Was it very expensive?" I asked out of curiosity.
"No it was pretty cheap. It was only about two hundred for everything I wear on my face," she said, lining her other eye slowly with a liquid black eyeliner into the shape of a cat's eye.
I was shocked that she thought two hundred dollars for makeup was cheap. To me that sounded like a fortune.
"Do you ever wear makeup?" she asked me.
I shook my head. "No, not really. I'm not very good at it, plus I can't really afford to spend money on stuff like that."
I didn't tell her, but at my house, I was lucky to even get the bare minimums that I needed to survive, like food and heat and electricity. Makeup wasn't high up on the priority list.
