Colton spoke up and said, "Caitlyn and I had been having problems for a while and after we broke up, I started thinking about how sweet Sydney was and how much fun we always used to have together when we were kids, so I decided to ask her out. That's it. There's no crazy story or anything Mom."
"Well HOW did you ask her out?" she prodded. "Did you at least make it romantic?"
She had a hopeful look on her face.
He shrugged. "I just texted her and said 'Hey, you wannna hang out on Friday? She said yes. The End."
His Mom narrowed her eyes and smacked his arm from across the table, looking aggravated that he wasn't giving her more.
The rest of us laughed. The funniest part was that she was prodding him for details about something that never actually happened. At least he wasn't falling into her trap and making something up. Simple is always the best way to go when you're lying. Caitlyn taught me that. She said the more complex you make the lie, the more likely you are to screw up one of the details and get caught.
"Hey Colton, did you check out the Bama game last night?" his Dad asked.
"I was busy, but I watched it this morning. Alabama straight up got robbed."
"Yeah they did! It was ridiculous!" his Dad yelled.
They had always been huge Alabama fans. I was thankful that Colton's Dad had changed the subject, but then they proceeded to talk about football for the next ten minutes while me and Colton's Mom just sat there. She gave me a knowing glance and rolled her eyes and I smiled.
Pretty soon after that our food came out, and right as I was about to take my first bite of lobster tail, I looked up and saw Caitlyn and her Mom being seated at the table right across from ours. My jaw fell open from shock and I lowered my fork. I couldn't believe she was really intruding on our lunch with his parents.Caitlyn's Mom looked over and noticed we were there and gasped, looking shocked to see us.
"Oh my gosh! You guys are all here too!? What a coincidence!" she shouted loudly, laughing. She was always really loud.
Colton looked across the table and gave me a look like, 'Seriously?'
He cleared his throat and said, "Well we did tell Caitlyn we were coming here, so I'm not sure how much of a coincidence it is."
Caitlyn laughed and said, "Actually, me and Mom were already planning to come here when I talked to you, but I forgot to mention it. Hey, since we're all here anyway, why don't we just scoot our table over and eat with you guys?"
"That's a great idea!" Caitlyn's Mom said, standing up, and then they started scooting their table over towards ours without waiting for us to say yes. I noticed Colton's Mom giving her husband a subtle side-eye as she dabbed her mouth with the cloth napkin. Maybe she wasn't as close of friends with Caitlyn's Mom as I had thought.
Caitlyn pulled her chair over next to Colton's and her Mom put her chair next to me, before sitting down with a big smile on her face. For some reason I had a sinking feeling that this was gonna be a very awkward, torturous lunch.
"You'll have to excuse my frozen face. I just got back from getting botox and I think they went a little overboard!" her Mom laughed. "It's so hard to find a good place."
Right then the waitress came back out and laid a plate of food in front of Caitlyn and her Mom.
"Oh yay! I'm starving! I always call ahead with our order so we don't have to wait. Ugh, there's NOTHING worse than having to wait for food," her Mom said with a laugh before she took a huge bite.
