The other girl looked confused and asked, "So if Caitlyn wasn't really doing it to help Sydney out, what was the real reason why she wanted Colton to pretend to date her?"
I held my breath, anxiously waiting to hear what she had to say. Then I realized I needed evidence, so I scrambled for my phone and quickly clicked record on the Voice notes app right before she answered.
"Caitlyn wanted to keep him distracted while she dated other guys. She didn't want him going out with somebody he could potentially fall in love with, in case she wanted him back and she knew there was absolutely NO risk of him falling for Sydney Ryan," she laughed.
Hearing that stung and I swallowed hard.
"Seriously?" the other girl asked. "That's so mean."
"Yeah, but it's the truth. She told me Sydney's just a placeholder to keep her spot warm so she can swoop right in and take Colton back when she's ready to."
I saw that girl shaking her head, saying, "Wow."
"If you think that's messed up, you haven't even heard the craziest part," the other one told her with a mischievous smile.
"There's more?!" the other girl asked with raised eyebrows.
"Yeah, so the excuse Caitlyn used to get Sydney and Colton to pretend to date was that it would help Sydney get Takashi Chang as a boyfriend."
The other one scoffed. "What?! Takashi Chang? With Sydney Ryan? Are you serious?" she laughed.
"Yeah, apparently she's had a crush on him for years! Isn't that crazy? As if she'd ever have a chance with him!" the other girl said with a laugh, shaking her head. "But you know how convincing Caitlyn can be. She told Sydney and Colton that if they pretended to date for a month, Takashi would look at her different. She said he'd see her as somebody on his level, worthy of dating if Colton had dated her. Caitlyn even volunteered to be Sydney's 'dating coach' and she started giving her advice on how to get Takashi to fall in love with her."
Both of the girls started laughing, as if that was the most ridiculous thing they'd ever heard.
"But what Sydney and Colton don't know is that Takashi couldn't date her even if he wanted to. They could only have a one-night stand or a fling, but nothing serious could ever come out of it."
"Why?" the other girl asked.
"Cause his family is really old-school. They'll only let him date girls from Japan that are from a wealthy, powerful family. Dating a poor American would bring shame on his family name, cause I guess they're like a really big deal over in Japan or something."
"And Caitlyn knew all that the whole time?" the other girl asked with wide eyes.
"Yeah. Isn't that crazy?"
They both started laughing as they walked out of the locker room and I clicked stop on the recording and let out the breath I had been holding. I sat there in shock, feeling numb, replaying what just happened over in my mind.
At this point, you wouldn't think I'd be surprised by anything Caitlyn does, but that seriously caught me off guard. I couldn't believe she had been playing me and Colton this whole time, the two people that were supposed to be the closest to her. She had just been pretending to help me, but she was really doing it all for her own selfish reasons. It felt like a punch in the gut.
