I looked up to see Mrs. Tate, my Social Studies teacher, standing beside us with her arms crossed across her chest, tapping her foot.
When she saw that it was me, her eyes widened in surprise.
"Oh, Sydney? Ummm, okay. Wow, I didn't expect that," she laughed, looking back and forth between me and Colton. "Well, even for you, I have to give you detention for PDA, both of you. There's no kissing allowed on school grounds."
My cheeks flushed and I tucked my hair behind my ear, looking down at the ground and saying quietly, "Yeah of course. I'm really sorry. It won't happen again."
"Make sure that it doesn't," she said firmly, looking back at Colton and glaring at him like he was a villain that had corrupted me.
She pulled out a little blue notepad and scribbled on it, before ripping out two pieces of paper and handing one to each of us. At the top it said 'Detention Slip'.
She gave both of us one more judgmental look before turning on her heel and walking away with her heels clacking on the floor.
"Wow, I've never gotten detention before," I laughed looking down at the blue slip in my hand.
Colton laughed too and said, "Sorry. I guess I'm a bad influence on you."
"Yeah, I guess so," I told him, rolling my eyes with a smile.
We were both silent for a few seconds and there was an awkward tension between us. Was either one of us going to bring up that kiss or were we going to just pretend it didn't happen?
"Well, I've ummm, I've gotta go talk to the coach. I'll uh, I'll see you later Syd," he said, hesitating as if he was thinking about saying something else, before he finally just turned and walked away.
I stood there, holding my books to my chest, watching him make his way down the hallway with girls turning their heads and watching him walk past. I couldn't stop thinking about that kiss. I lifted my fingers and touched them lightly to my lips, remembering how perfect it was. It almost felt like it had been a dream.
"Hey you!" someone said from close beside me, making me gasp and jump.
"Shit!" I shouted. "You about gave me a heart attack."
"Oh sorry," Takashi laughed with a smile, leaning up against the locker beside me. "I didn't mean to scare you. I just wanted to tell you that I'm sorry for cancelling our homework session last night. I had WAY too much going on."
"Like what?" I asked, with my heart still racing from that scare.
"I'm training for a big title fight. The guy I'm going up against is undefeated and they say he's good enough to give me some real competition. I might actually have to break a sweat for once," he laughed. "But that's why I couldn't work on Biology with you."
I shrugged my shoulders. "It's okay. I understand," I said, letting out an exhale. "Did you at least get your half of the homework done?"
"Yeah, it took me like a minute. Your American schools are so far behind what I was learning back in Japan. This is like kiddie shit. It's no wonder Americans are so dumb," he scoffed.
Hearing that made me really angry and I said, "Ummmm, Excuse me? If we're so dumb, why have Americans invented so many things? We discovered electricity, invented the light bulb, the cell phone, the computer, the technology that was used to make the internet, the Windows software that runs most computers in the world, GPS, airplanes, the cotton gin, the washing machine, we made the Model T and the assembly line that made cars accessible to the entire world! Did you know 87% of inventions can be traced back to an American?! So tell me again why you think we're so stupid?" I asked, with my arms folded across my chest, glaring at him as I tried to catch my breath from talking so fast. He really had me worked up.
