"And then BAM,
She got hit by a BIG ASS bus..."

Bailey

"This is seriously unbelievable," Wren exclaimed from her seat on the floor. I had just finished playing her "Someone Like You" by Adele on the piano while she finished up her homework for the upcoming weekend. Slamming her laptop shut, she looked at me in awe while I smirked.

"I trained her well, didn't I?" Grandpa Matt asked, coming from the doorway.

"Hey! Don't take all the credit, I practiced for ages to be able to pick up songs that fast," I exclaimed from the piano bench.

"Yes, you did," he smiled before waving us into the kitchen. "Come on, dinner is ready."

After standing from the bench, I leaned over to where Wren was sitting and offered her my arm to pull her up before we made our way to the kitchen. Grandpa Matt had already served our plates and placed them on the table, so we quickly took our seats and dug in.

"Oliver, you have outdone yourself," Wren said, mouth half full of pasta. With my own mouth full of pasta, I moaned my agreement to her statement.

"I try to," my grandfather laughed. "Harlow, are you still wanting to go with us to the boy's game tomorrow?"

Wren quickly finished chewing the food in her mouth before wiping her face and responding.

"I should be able to, I will just have to double check with my parents," she paused. "I finished all my homework a little bit ago, so they shouldn't have a problem with it."

"Let me know if I need to call them," my grandfather said. "We're gonna be leaving here about 5:30 so we can get there early this time. We're not sure what this stadium's seating arrangement is, so Anna and I want to get there early."

Tomorrow's game is three towns over in Stonehaven, which is about an hour drive. We usually carpool with Ms. Davis and Delilah to the away games, and now hopefully we're adding Wren to the mix.

Her parents have gotten a little bit more lenient this year, with it being senior year and all, and we are hoping this means she can travel with us for away games now.

"What time would we be back?" Wren asked, nervously.

"You can stay the night, it will probably be late," I offered, looking to Grandpa Matt for approval but he was already nodding his agreement.

"Okay, I'll talk to them when I get home tonight and let you know," Wren said before shoving another forkful of pasta in her mouth.

I went to take another bite of my own food, but my phone buzzed before I had the chance. Seeing it was a notification from Beckett, I set my fork down before picking up the phone and reading his message.

Beckett: Think you could come over and help me on my Frankenstein essay? I am desperate to have it turned in before tomorrow's game.

"Yeah, and then she got hit by a bus."

My head snapped up from my phone at Wren's words.

"What?" I asked, looking from my best friend to my grandfather.

"Nice," he laughed, high-fiving Wren.

"Can someone explain?" I urged.

"You got quiet, and we tried calling your name. Whoever is texting you has all your attention. Care to share with the table?" Grandpa Matt smirked.

Lovely.

"It's just Beckett," I said, going back to my phone to reply.

"You hear that, Harlow? Our girl is on texting basis with neighbor boy. It's about time!" He exclaimed. "What did he say?"

"He, uh, was wondering if I could come over and help him with his essay for english."

"Tonight?"

"Yeah, is that okay? I can tell him no, I know it's a school night," I said, even though I really wanted to go.

"No, no. Don't break the poor fella's heart. You can go after dinner, just don't be over there too late, he has a game tomorrow," Grandpa Matt said, smiling.

"Yes sir," I beamed, pressing send on my message to Beckett.

Me: Sure, just let me finish dinner with Grandpa Matt and Wren. I'll be over in 30.

He liked the message, and I set my phone down to finish eating. When I noticed the quiet, I looked up to see both my best friend and grandfather looking at me quizzically.

"What?" I shrugged.

"Nothing," they both said in sync. I brushed it off, but only because I knew if I pushed it, it would lead to more teasing. I already had a good idea what it was about anyways, because I could feel it.

I could not stop smiling.
